Driving in the USA?

I'm hiring a car in California this summer and wan't to know if there are any major differences in their rules of the road. I understand the turning right on a red light rule but is there anything else I should be aware of?

Drive on the right side of the road. Stop at the red signs that read Stop. Yield at the red triangular signs that read yield. If you see some a white matrix of lines on the road, and they or at a stop sign, stop before the white matrix; It is called a crosswalk. If you happen to be driving and see a sign on the side of the road, and the sign shows a deer or any other animal there is a likelihood of having an encounter with the depicted animal. In the event of an encounter, do not panic, simply feather the brake (lightly apply the brake) and continue when the creature is safely out of the way of your vehicle. I hope you enjoy your U.S. driving experience and always remember: do not drink, smoke, phone, fornicate, or think while in the process of driving.

Many of the larger cities have what we call "the Gridlock Law". This means that when traffic is heavy you can not enter an intersection unless your car can completely cross the intersection . In other words if the light turns red, and your car is stuck any where in the intersection blocking the movement of cross traffic you will receive a traffic citation, if caught.

Pedestrians have the right of way when crossing the street. You must stop for them.

Turning left on a green light isn't protected without a arrow. Lots of accidents by foreign drivers in my area.because of this.

The speed limit is the minimum speed you can drive, its good to go about 30mph above the speed limit at all times.
