Can bipolar disorder be treated without drugs?

I'm looking for ideas to treat or lessen the effects of this disease without using prescription drugs.

Aromatherapy, diet, etc ......... has anyone had success with natural treatments?

Because bipolar can be extremely serious, it is important not to take treatment lightly. Also, it is a progressive disease, and has a growing impact on the person's life as they grow older, if not effectively treated. There is no single treatment that works for everyone. Some are helped by one medication, others need a complicated combination. Some become tolerant of a medication after a while and must change. I would stay away from St. John's Wort because of how it can interact with other meds. It is mostly recommended for depression anyway, and bipolar is much more complicated than that. Counseling and treatment by a prescribing psychiatrist are recommended. In addition to omega 3, magnesium (preferably not magnesium oxide) has been shown to possibly be helpful. Sleep is extremely important--typically 8-10 hours, as is a healthy diet. Eliminating junk foods, chemical additives, and processed white grains and sugar is also good. Exercise is also important. Still, what we are talking about is physical in that it is an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. It takes more than "mind control" to beat it. If the meds you are on are not working or causing bad side effects, go back to the doctor and ask to try something else, or even try another doctor. But just going off the meds could be very dangerous. Bipolar disorder can destroy the lives of those who have it, and wreak havoc on the lives of those who love them. Take it very seriously. Something as simple as aromatherapy will not cure it anymore than it will cure diabetes or HIV.

OMG,it is so NOT a made up disease you ignorant so and so. I hope you never ever have to learn to deal with it.

Herbal or natural supplements, such as St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum), have not been well studied, and little is known about their effects on bipolar disorder. Because the FDA does not regulate their production, different brands of these supplements can contain different amounts of active ingredient. Before trying herbal or natural supplements, it is important to discuss them with your doctor.

There is evidence that St. John's wort can reduce the effectiveness of certain medications. In addition, like prescription antidepressants, St. John's wort may cause a switch into mania in some individuals with bipolar disorder, especially if no mood stabilizer is being taken.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil are being studied to determine their usefulness, alone and when added to conventional medications, for long-term treatment of bipolar disorder

I've heard a doctor suggest that it can sometimes be due to toxins, therefore, a natural detoxification can be of benefit. What they suggested was a bio-available whey protein. What this does is provide the body with the needed essential fatty acids that the body requires to manufacture glutathione. Glutathione has as one the it's functions, the job of detoxifying the body. It is perfectly safe and natural, your body cannot make too much glutathione, no matter how much whey protein you eat. 20 grams per day should be sufficient. Do not confuse with the common whey protein concentrate, it is not the same and will not provide you with the quantities of essential amino acids that you need.

Keep in mind that it took the body a long time to develop this condition, it will take a while for the body to heal itself too.

Make sure you can digest milk and if you can't remove it from your diet. 15% of Europeans can't digest lactose, for other races the percentage can be as high as 100%. The symptoms can be very subtle; it took me 45 years to find out that I can't. My mother told me that she recalls that when I was a toddler I had trouble with milk but it seemed I was later able to tolerate it. So I continued to drink until recently. Within two weeks of removing all milk containing foods from my diet my bipolar stopped. I've been free of BP for a year now. From my reading I discovered that lactose interferes with copper metabolism and copper is essential for nerves. Calves liver is a good source for copper and I also added that to my diet.

If a person is suffering from a Manic episode, the ideal drug is Lithium Carbonate (Li2CO3). A dose between 300 milligrams to 1,200 milligrams divided in three times per 24 hour period, will help control serious symptoms. Lithium is also available in "natural presentations". Usually to ingest 8 mEq you will need to swallow more than 4 pills every 8 hours, because the "Natural Lithium" comes in lower doses of 0.5 mEq up to 1.6 mEq.

The Mind can control almost anything, however, the patient must be trained to acquire such control.

Bi-polar disease needs to be treated with a combination of the right prescription drug along with therapy with a counselor or psychatrist. I would also recommend adding regular physical activity and exercise.

Source(s): Younger brother had this disease for many years and there were many low times. and experimentation wih different medications.
