I had a similar situation sometimes ago my passport expired sometime in 2005 and all i did was to walk into the immigration office in 2007 and did a renewal not obtaining a new one irrespective of the year lapse though am a nigerian residing in Nigeria, yours may depend on the country you come from and the laws guiding your country of residence, so take a bold step and visit the immigration or go to there website to find out how to go about it and the rules guiding such lapses.

Simple to renew online--for 55$. Or you can go to the post office and sub,it the forms and renew. You have 15 years from date of expiration before you have to get a whole new one.

No need to apply for a new passport. Your existing passport will be renewed. Of course the authorities will be levied a nominal fee for this delay. The grace period for renewing passport is six months from the date of expiry.
Good luck.
