...Let me guess...When you edit your avatar, you lose it...?

The badges are dynamic, to quote the A-Team "Top Contributors are not permanent, which is to say you must continue to be an active answerer in order to retain a Top Contributor badge. Similarly, even if you are not a Top Contributor today, you can earn the badge by contributing high quality answers in any category or multiple categories of your choosing." You can read all about the badges here -

Also keep in mind it's a brand new feature and they are still working out the exact formula to recognize quality over quantity, so there may be a few glitches here and there.

Nope -- that's not the cause. It is just a VERY DYNAMIC thing.
From the Yamster:
"Top Contributors are not permanent, which is to say you must continue to be an active answerer in order to retain a Top Contributor badge. Similarly, even if you are not a Top Contributor today, you can earn the badge by contributing high quality answers in any category or multiple categories of your choosing."
So, you CAN lose it -- but you can also get it back, or even get one in a totally new category!

It's not a lifetime award! If you're a "top contributor" then you need to keep answering a lot of questions in that category or they strip you of your title.
Or maybe you lost it through another of the infamous Yahoo glitches in the system. I dunno, I'd say if it's still not back then it's that you didn't answer enough questions to keep it.

The "Yahoo Gods" have spoken. You either use your top contributor or lose it.
