Fade controls the front to back. You probably want to fade it back a bit because that's where your more powerful speakers will be.
Balance controls the left to right. That should stay dead center unless you've got a blown speaker you want to get away from.
Treble controls the higher pitches like cymbals and high pitch voices. Too much treble really can't do any damage. I HATE treble so I keep it down. A lot of people like it. It's totally your preference.
Bass controls the lower pitches. If you hear any distortion you need to turn your bass down because you're damaging your speakers and possibly your head unit if you're running an amp.

Well if you want bass change the bass to +5 or highest it can go to and put treble all the way up if you want to be able to hear the words over all the bass and leave the the balance at 0 because it adjusts what side of the car is louder.
