How fast can one go (on average) balls out on a "crotch rocket?"?

I know some one who recently hit a tree and those with him said he was going 150 mph. Is this possible? He is most likely going to be taken off life support soon. And I just want to know if those things go THAT fast.

Update:

He will die most likely very soon, as he is brain dead and paralyzed, and they may suspend life support.

how about ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY! Click the link and hop on, sistah.

BTW: A 1/4 mile in 10.2 seconds is under 90 mph.

    0.25 miles / 10.2* 60 seconds / minute * 60 minutes / hour = 88.23529412 miles/hour

UPDATE: yes, I KNOW this is average speed. Now re-read the original Q and tell me exactly WHY my math is wrong, please.

While driving the speed limit from my job in the Silicon Valley, I calculated the acceleration rate and (possible) top speed of a mass covering a 1/4 mile in 10.2 seconds, assuming a constant rate of acceleration. This works out to 160 mph. In practical terms, bike's deccelerate slightly during the shifting cycle, and reach their top speed before the 1/4 mile is over, so the practical max speed (which his not "average," the subject of this Q,) is around 130-135 mph

Not to be callous, but that supports every story I've heard about someone killing themselves on a bike: doing something incredibly stupid right before the crash.

Yes, they do go that fast. Modern sportbikes have the handling capabilities of a fighter jet, and take an equal amount of skill to ride properly. You don't get that skill in a month, or even a year.

A 2007 Honda Civic coupe has a 1799cc engine and will do 0-60 in about 9 seconds. A supersport bike has a 600cc engine (almost 1/3 the size of the Civic) and will do 0-60 in under 4 seconds. The Honda tops out at about 90mph, while the motorcycle will be pushing 150mph with one gear left.

A 1000cc, or "literbike" will simply accelerate faster and are often factory limited to 186mph. They often have more horsepower than the Civic, and weigh ten times less. Newbies on literbikes are just accidents waiting to happen.

Motorcycling, like everything in life, is a calculated risk. Some are willing to risk more than others, and often they pay the ultimate price. I've had my 600cc's speedo up to 145mph, and I wasn't even at redline. I could have gone faster, but I ran out of safe road when I started getting closer to a freeway exit, and there are risks that I'm not willing to take.

Besides, cornering at 50mph is much more fun and takes more skill.

Yes, he sure could have been going 150 mph. These crotch rockets are almost made to racing specs, and the racing motorcycles can do more than 200. I am sorry for your loss.

I had a Kawasaki Police Special, not very aerodynamic. I took it up to 100 mph, and there was enough power left that if I'd had the guts it would have gone up to 130.

So sad about your friend. Fact is, it doesn't take that much speed if you hit a tree.

My RF900 Suzuki, according to the magazines, will do 172. In a sanctioned record-setting attempt with 18 riders, it averaged 162 for an hour, on a closed course in France; in 24 hours, the average dropped to 152 (including gas stops and a tire change). So, it's possible -- and my bike is 10 years old, and I have under $4k in it.

I have never explored its top speed, but I can attest to the fact that 1st gear will break 70mph, and second is good for over 100; and by crotch-rocket standards, it's long in the tooth. (It's a 5-speed.)

a 10 thousand dollar Yamaha R6 hits 100 mph faster than a 415,000 dollar 615 horsepower Porsche Carrera GT. (under 7 seconds!). thats faster than most cars hit 60 mph. Its just insane.

a hayabusa has a top speed of around 200 mph.

motorcycles are SCARY fast. they call them crotch rockets for a reason. they are outrageously fast.

and im amazed he even made it to life support/is in one piece.

while motorcycles top speeds are very impressive, they arent even close to as impressive as how fast they get there. The 1000cc bikes do 10 second (or even high 9 second) quarter miles.

some bikes do 180. dont sit up doing that. some people put rocket engines on bikes now too. sick. i feel for you and your friend. atleast he went doing what he loved. guy up there with the average speed. you start off at 0. there has to be websites do get top speed at 10.2, probably averages for that too. but if you do a 10.2 quarter your probably running bout 120, 130 at the 1/4, ya the hayabussa is the top full production bike out there now.

My Yamaha FJ 1100 is 20 years old & tops out at about 260KPH.. thats 160 MPH....new bikes are quicker....

& if you want I can email you a pic from the emergency room of a guy who impailed himself on a fence post at better than 100 MPH & survived....back riding his bike within 12 months..

    (Its not a pretty sight)

150 is possible depending on the Bike and size of the bike. I have seen "crotch rockets do upwards in the 120+ on a 1/4 mile dragstrip before and that was a street legal bike. 150 and hitting a tree would land him in a box 6ft under, I think your friends misjudged his speed.

I ride a newer model kawasaki 600 "crotch rocket" and late one night on a deserted freeway my digital speedometer read 174mph. I have the california model and with its extra emissions controls slowing me down I should have been doing 180mph.

Sorry to hear about your friend.I don't know about top speeds and o-60 times and all that crazy stuff,We're supposed to be riders out there not racers. It's a shame for someone to have to learn the hard way.

Source(s): Not striving to be the fastest or most impressive will keep you the safest.
