I've never heard of it being free but below is a link of certified jewelry appraisers I'm sure you could call them to compare pricing and find out if any of them do it for free

If you want absolute rock bottom wholesale, take it to the Dallas Jewelry Exchange and ask them for a value "if you were to trade it in on a new diamond" or something similar.
I will tell you that I took in rings with diamonds appraised for insurance purposes at over $10,000 and they told me they'd give me $1200 in trade in. So when I say rock bottom, I mean it!
