Mean is cruel, spiteful, sadistic, unkind, petty, vindictive.
Mean is a word which signifies being unkind or unpleasant. You could also consider it the opposite of nice.
There are other connotations/denotations for "mean" (balance, shabby, numerical average, cheap, to have as one's purpose, etc but in reference to the quality of a person, it is most likely the "un-nice" connotation which applies.)
