Can you apply fall fertilizer (Scott's Brand) to the lawn in the spring? We have half a bag left over and we are moving soon and I don't know how to dispose of it.

The general differences between a normal lawn fertilizer and a winterizing lawn fertilizer is:
1) A winterizer lawn fertilizer uses a fast release nitrogen source that is not affected by soil temperatures because fall applications often occur when temperatures start to decline.
2) They add more potassium because potassium promotes cold hardiness in a plant.
If you go to the Scotts' web site (http://www.scotts.com)/ you will see that the analysis for Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer is 29-3-4 and Turf Builder Winterguard is 22-3-14. The last number of the analysis is the percentage of potassium by weight. Normal Turf Builder has 4% potassium versus Winterguard which has 14% potassium
Can you use a winterizer in spring? Sure! It will do no harm. Just remember that the nitrogen source is a quick release form so you will get a fast green-up that will not last as long if you use a normal fertilizer. Also, your grass will get a potassium boost over a normal fertilizer. Potassium does more than affect cold hardiness. Another benefit of potassium is heat hardiness. Using more potassium in spring will positively affect your lawn's heat hardiness. Good luck on your move.

Read the bag and see what it says. If it says to definitely not put it on in the spring, then don't. If it says that it is just nitrogen, potassium, and potash then throw it on. The three big numbers on the bag are the percentages of these chemicals ( 30-2-10) for example. These chemicals are fine anytime. If you put the spreader setting on a lower number it will put very little fertilizer on any given area and won't do much to the lawn, not much benefit or harm. Anyway, If it was me I would put it on but at a lower setting then they suggest on the bag. Spread it out over your whole lawn as sparsely as you can,I dought you will see any difference. Anyway, your moving, who cares. (just kidding) I worked at a golf course for six years.

Your fall fertilzer is a winterizer that will promote dormancy in the grass... I wouldn't do this if I were you. Either leave it for the new owners of your house or take it with you and use it in the fall. Scotts fertilzer is expensive and is worth saving for tha long. Right now you really need a Super Turf Builder on your lawn.

you can use this fert anytime. it doesn't force dormancy and is OK to use now. It is formulated to enhance root strength, but that's OK in the spring, too.
if you have room, save it 'til fall, but I think it's fine to put it down now.
If it makes you feel better, put it down at half the recommended rate and put down "spring" fertilizer over it at half rate. your grass will be confused and think that it's summer <wink>

Put it in a plastic garbage bag and take with to use in the fall.
And don't use this type in spring!

give it to the new home owner and tell him when to apply it. That's the only thing I can think of.
