Alcohol and anitbiotics?

1) You always here don't drink if your on antibiotics because it makes them not work...Why?

2) I s this true for all antibiotics or is a carryover from pennicillin and new ones aren't affected?

3) Does it make them not work or just lessens the support they give?

4) Also, is a single beer out or are they talking more getting drunk like?

Update:

lol No I"m not a drunk...got the first few responces....no I was asking about the actuall effects, I'm not in any need of any 12 step lol I'm not even on antiobitics. I was looking for the chemical reason why, or human phisiological reason why.

    1) Regular intake of alcohol induces microsomal enzymes (enzymes that help in clearing many drugs from the body). Therefore a decrease in concentration of the drug and its ineffectiveness. But it is not restricted to antibiotics alone and not all antibiotics undergo this type of degradation

2)Antibiotics such as cefoperazone, moxalactum, metronidazole etc, cause a "Disulfiram like reaction" (Flushing, perspiration, headache, fainting etc.) when taken along with alcohol.

    Hence the saying.

If you are that desperate to drink, you may have a serious problem with alcohol.

Many things can interact with individual drugs, orange juice, or milk, sometimes, for example, for many reasons. If the prescription says "no alcohol" that doesn't mean don't get drunk, it means do not drink any alcohol at all. If you want the specifics, you'll need to speak with the pharmacist regarding the particular drug you are taking, but if the label says no alcohol, that is not a "carryover," it is for your specific drug.

Take your antibiotics, exactly as prescribed. And consider talking to a professional about whether or not you have a problem with alcohol dependency.

Alcohol lowers your immune system. And if you are only going to be on anti biotics for a couple weeks or so, is it that hard just not to drink during that time?
