The biggest problem is high interest, lower reading level materials that the young man will not be embarrased to carry with him. This is where Hemingway comes in. Hemingway wrote on a fourth to fifth grade reading level, actually at parts, even lower. That young man can carry that literature without loosing his pride. With that literature look at theme, plot, word choice , characterization, figurative language etc. Go to sparknotes.com and they have most of that there as well as some quizzes.

1. I highly recommend finding books on topics in he is interested. That will provide the motivation.
2. Skim through the book, looking for words that could give him difficulty.
3. Prepare to introduce these words and their definitions to him.
4. Read part of the section aloud. This will build interest and help comprehension.
5. Ask the low level questions of: Who? What happened? When? When? first, then ask the Why questions.
Hope this helps.

Go for interesting, young-adult themed books. The vocabulary in these books is meant for younger teens, but the story lines are often interesting and not ridiculously complicated. As for lessons, make them mostly centered around writing short paragraphs using vocab words and reading passages with questions at this end. This simultaneously helps to strengthen reading comprehension and clarity of writing.

How old is this young man, and what are his interests? Find books that would appeal to his interests. There are many bilbliographies on the internet where you can find books organized by themes and age groups. Like one of the other people who posted said, you should find books that are within his reading ability that he would not be embarassed to be seen reading.
Does he like graphic novels? While I don't like students to read those all of the time, they can be a starting place for reluctant readers. Young men tend to like books with a lot of action, science fiction, or non-fiction.
Good luck!

Kids that take that dont value learning. They probably take it just to drop out.
