What is being a teacher like?

I’ve been wanting to be a teacher since I was younger. I decided to pursue it. I am almost out of high school! (: I  want to work in elementary settings, grades pre-k to 3rd grade. Even if your don't teach elementary, I would love to hear your experiences in any grade level you've taught. Thanks!

My niece is a teacher. She has been for over 15 years. She teaches 2nd  and 3rd grades.  She loves it. It is a perfect job for her.

It is a lot of work. You are at home planning lessons and grading papers. You have meetings and parent conferences after school.

Teachers do not pay into social security, so you won’t have that benefit when you retire. Read up on the pros and cons  and what your state policies and laws are on that.

You really need to think about what university you attend. Where will you be able to teach with a  degree from that university from that state. Read up on getting qualified to teach in another state if you move or find a job out of state.

Getting your Masters degree can put you into a higher salary bracket. My niece did her masters degree while teaching full time.

Mr daughter’s friend took a job in Alaska. Working in a tiny village. They gave her housing, food and a salary. She committed to two years. An experience of a lifetime.  She ended up staying in Alaska, moving to a large city. After 7 years of teaching she has move into working for the school district.  She oversees online teaching. Helping the teachers and giving seminars.

Another teacher I know started teaching on US military base schools.

My cousins daughter finished her degree and student teaching, got a job and then quit after one semester. She hated it.

Another friend went from teacher into administration, she is now a vice principal.

Many corporations will hire people who have been teachers for training programs. Teachers are usually very organized and have skills that can useful in other settings.

You should be researching universities right now,

Make sure their education department is well regarded and rigorous.

My niece went to a private school in Ohio and had a very demanding education department. . I feel she was much better prepared for teaching in her own than others I have seen enter into teaching.

Do apply to 3-6 schools amd at least one in state public school and one private schools.

Private schools tend to hand out more financial aid.

Get out of your undergrad degree with as little student debt as possible. Go for the school that is cheapest for you to attend.

Talk to some people who are fresh out of college about their student loans,  many people are paying over $1000 a month on them.

Im a middle school teacher right now and its a blast! I am still new to this whole thing because I just recently graduated from my teaching certification program so I am still learning the ropes. I love the hours, I love the kids, and I love the interactions I have every day. I wanted a job that would allow me to be creative and have fun and this is definitely where I belong. I am glad to see more and more young people go into this career field (I mean i'm not old in any way but still I love to see it!). I can't wait for you to step foot into your first classroom! Life changing experience. I will admit that time management and multitasking are necessary for this line of work so if you are good in those... AWESOME! If not, practice and find ways that help you. I highly recommend exercise like walking or yoga to destress because sometimes it can be a lot to handle but I promise you will get your footing. It's all about finding your style. Teaching is such a rewarding career because you physically get to see your students succeeding. I hope you find your place and find this career to be your dream come true! <3
