Can I plug 2 mice (different kinds) into different ports in a usb device and use either w/o restarting laptop?

My husband and I prefer different styles of optical mouse. He would like to get a ball mouse, but it's too big for my short fingers. If two mice are plugged into the usb ports, can we just sit down and use either mouse without restarting our laptop?

    I have both a Logitech trackball and a Microsoft optical mouse plugged in to my desktop computer and they both work.
