San Antonio, Tx cost of living?

I see that apartments, in S.A, cost much less than the apartments in Chicago. But, is the job bank in S.A good? do they pay enough to sustain life? meaning, rent, food, and utilities? I dont need to be Rich, just a deceant paying job. On the other hand , how is life in San Antonio. Pics look nice, but I hear that most of the city is old, dirty, and run down. Any advice out there?

Update:

The question, is for people who lived there or live there! I need info from experience.

Thanks!

i live in san antonio, and life is good, there are soooo many things to do you could go downtown, shopping ( we have A LOT of malls), the park, historical sites, and the night life is packed with stuff to do, like at a club here, gym class heroes, red jumsuit apparatus, and daughtry preformed, at the verison wireless ampatheater, fall out boy is comming, and don't forget fiesta texas, and sea world. and there are more than enough job opprotunities, some more than others, depends on what you do. the city might be old, but its not run down, now they are improving it more than ever, there are roads, highways, buildings, houses and much more that are being bulit!!!! Enjoy!!!!

As any city there are the bad along with the good. So, it depends on what side of town you plan to live if you are going to the West side or East side, you are in for trouble. Much of the southside is slowly progressing, but the Northside is booming. My side is not old or run down or dirty. I live near a beautiful 250+ acre park (McAlister) The ambience is wonderful coming down Jones Maltsberger from the airport exit of Nakoma which turns into Jones Maltsberger (don't be fooled there are several exits to Jones Maltsberger) But if you come down J-M toward thousand oaks, you can find a nice apartment at a reasonable price and depending on what you do you can even find a good job at a reasonable income. Even if you are a construction worker, most of the men who work construction expect no less than $100 a day and they get it, but they are working hard. Minimum wage is often the pay for the young and naive and old and ignorant, but it is not hard to find a better paying job if you are skilled in some area. Plus there are a load of universities and junior colleges in the area that can teach your skill. The universities are a little pricy as most are private, but the jr. colleges are very reasonable especially if you have been a resident for at least 6 months. And, there are many smaller towns around the area that are very reasonable to live in if you prefer that to big city life. Depending on your age and if you are coming from Chicago, you may really like Austin.

San Antonio is so nice! I just moved here from California 2 weeks ago. My reason of moving was also the cost of living. Everything is much cheaper then most places. There are areas like the older areas more south that is the ghetto. I live north east and its all brand new upcoming area. My in laws live north west in more city life and its just as nice. Pay for working is very good. minimum wage is like $5.11 but mostly everyone makes more then that. Anymore ?'s don't hesitate to ask..

I don't live in San Antonio but my aunt does and she can afford to live there on nothing but her husbands social security so I would imagine that living there would not cost too much. Every time that I go downtown, I always see a lot of "now hiring" signs in the windows. Some of the city is run down and dirty but there are some really nice parts too.

Ok, in all honesty, don't move here, repeat do not move here. My husband and I moved here two years ago (He's military) and hate it here so much. It doesn't matter what part of the city you live in here, you will be a victim of some sort of crime. The crime rate here is extreme. Don't get me wrong, if you want to visit here, go ahead, yes the riverwalk is nice, but that is the only thing worth seeing, other than the Alamo I guess. Just do not move here, it is so hard to get a job here, and the majority of them are for call center type places. People cannot drive here also. My husband is almost in an accident ever single day. If he wasn't such a good driver he would have been hit about 1,000 times already. I could tell you so many stories. For your own good, do not move here.

It just depends on the side of town you choose. You can easily find a good job and a nice apartment. No, it's not dirty. Of course, every city is going to have it's share of grafitti and bad sides of town. That's city life. San Antonians are very happy, pleasant people.
