How do I transfer files and software from one pc to another?

I have a laptop on its last legs hard drive. It will boot up to windows one last time or two.

The cd drawer will not write nor read cd's.

Can I hook up a double sided usb cable from the almost dead laptop to my new desktop and transfer software and files.

It is important that I be able to transfer both the software and the files that are contained to go with them.

Does the almost dead laptop have to be powered up in order to do this?

Any other help that I have not thought of would also be appreciated.

thanks

cindy

Update:

ok, everyone keeps using the word files. Is the use of this word including software?

Simply transfering files will not help me, I need to transfer the software also. Meaning, I need my tax software for four years to transfer along with the files of the tax returns that are in them. I need to transfer my accounting software right along with all the accounting information that is contained within it.

Sorry to sound so simple, but I speak very fragmented computerese.

thanks again

cindy

While you can use some network cables (crossover) to transfer data you would be better off if you can use a USB memory card and transfer the critical data to it. It's much less complicated; just plug and go. There may be a USB cable that does the job but I haven't heard of one. If the problem is with the laptop and not the hard drive in the laptop you can purchase an adapter for about $5.00 that you can plug into the IDE drive and hook it up to your desktop computer and transfer data. This would be the way to go if there is more data to transfer than you have USB memory to store it to. Last, you could take your laptop to a computer geek shop and have them transfer the data and it probably won't cost that much if they can get the drive to spin up and work correctly. I back up all my critical data to a folder on my desktop and when I remember to back the folder up I do to CDs (usually once a month or so). For mission critical data weekly or daily backups are the best method. Don't wait until your hard drive dies completely before backing up your data. The story I tell over and over is when I was having problems with one of my computers (it kept crashing) and I finally decided to back everything up. Right after I finished backing everything up to CDs the computer froze again and I couldn't get the drive to power up again. I bought a new drive that day, formatted it and loaded the backed up data to it and was up and running again in about 2 hours. I have other true stories about not backing up with not-so-happy endings. If all else fails you can try Norton recovery on the drive but I haven't had that much luck with it. Don't waste your time with Data Recovery companies. They charge you for trying with no guarantees. Good luck.

As far as I know, you can use USB, or you can setup a network by using an ethernet cable. If you use USB, and on an old laptop, the chances of it being 1.1 are big, and 1.1 transfer speeds are SLOW. For 1 GB of data it will take about 10 minutes if not longer. The faster way is making a connection through a LAN connection. Just connect 1 ethernet cable to one PC and the other end to the laptop, and go through the control panel to check.

Yes your laptop has to be on, silly.

Yes, they both have to be running. You can do it using a USB data transfer cable. It's a special cable that you can get at any computer store. You could also go but a cheap USB thumb/Flash drive and transfer data that way. Just plug it ina USB port on the old, tranfer it to the thumb drive and reverse that the put data on the new computer.

yes you need a transfer cable.you can get one at most computer stores.you can also get software to set up a network.you must install the software on both computers.if your cdrom don,t work on the old one you can save the software on your new computer and email it to yourself and down load it to the old or for that matter you can upload the files from the old and download to the new.it would take longer but you would, not have to buy anything...good luck

Do not plug a double sided USB cable in it will damage both computers.

To transfer files you need to buy:

A crossover cable for Ethernet transfer (faster) or

A USB a bridge cable for USB

You need to buy a crossover cable. Do not use a standard cable to directly connect 2 computers!
