am i crazy?

my dog was eating hills prescription diet I/D for chronic pancreatitis, she was otherwise healthy and died on sunday for no apperent reason, we didnt have a necropsy performed because we chalked it up to a life of illnesses although she was asymptomatic until we opened a new bag of food and she became fussy with her food, now i see hills is recalling dry food, i still have the bag of food, but not the dogs body what do I do next?

Update:

where do i go, who do i contact? to have the food tested

Update 2:

where do i go, who do i contact? to have the food tested

Update 3:

uggh, she didnt go to the vet, it was a sunday, so the animal control in out town has a private cremation service, we had them do it, i thought... it cant be the food because it was all wet and no precription, and now im starting to panic

I'm so sorry you lost your beloved dog. They give us so much joy, and ask for so little from us.

I just checked the Hill's website and they are only recalling wet canned cat food. So, no need to worry about the dry food. Becoming fussy with the food may have been a sign that her overall condition was deteriorating. Many dogs will start to refuse food during the last few days of life.

I think you can take some comfort from the fact that there is no evidence that the dog food caused a problem. You were feeding her the prescription diet her veterinarian recommended, and that's important.

Sounds like you were a responsible owner giving your pet good care. You probably extended her life because of this. So, although I know you are sad, I don't want you to blame yourself or her food. You did the best you could.

Again, my sympathies on your loss.

Take out a baggie of the food, and on a label on the baggie, write down the serial numbers that you find on the bag. Not the UPC code information, but the info at the top or bottom of the bag, the numbers that tells them the batch and date etc. PUT IT AWAY..

Then take the rest of the bag, and give your vet a call and see if he knows where food that needs to be tested should go. If not, he is likely to be able to point you in the right direction. Send it for testing.

The baggie you have is back up, just in case somewhere along the line someone pretends that they lost the food you sent for testing.

The Science diet cat dry is recalled, It wouldn't surprise me if the dogfood is recalled next.

    Sorry about your dog :(

Hill's recalled their foods as a precaution, so i don't think that would be the problem. However, depending on your vet, they may still have the body (we only have pick-up every few weeks, and we store in a large freezer until then), though all test results would be unfortunately voided.

Talk to your veterinarian about your concerns...it will at least give you peace of mind.

Call the company. They killed your dog, and now they need to pay for it. If you have any sort of proof like a vet notice, then you should be fine. Sue if you can. Also complain to the place where you baught it if you got it after the announcement.

I am sorry about your loss and I hope everything turns out for the better.

Have the food analyzed. At least call the vet and ask what they recommend. There should be someone the incident can be reported to so they are at least aware of the severity of the problem.

Sorry for your loss!! HUGS!! ; (

My sincerest condolences, talk to the vet to see if their is a place to have the food analysized, symptoms and bvet records may be consistent, maybe a university nearby can help

I'm sure a statement from your vet would help too.
