net curtains, what is the point?

I moved into my house a couple of years ago, it has ordinary curtains plus net curtains, and poncy ones at that, they collect dirt and I have religously washed them and put them back up, but as I did that today, it occurred to me what is the point, just seems to cause extra work, and if I don't want people to see in I can just draw the normal ones, is this an old peoples fashion or what?

Update:

Thanks, my bedroom faces on to the road and being a bungalow is at street level. I just hate the look of poncy curtains, so far the answer from Mucky looks like the better option,

Update 2:

Mind you, Patsy's idea is not so bad, but you have all clarified my query, so thanks peeps for constructive and informative answers

They let light in without your nosey neighbours seeing what you get up to!

If you live in the middle of nowhere then I can't see the point, but live in town where everyone can have a look in your bedroom I think the privacy the give is quite reassuring! - lol!

I can't stand the ones with leaves and flowers on, the voile ones don't last very well so I've got some plain cotton ones up at the moment.

    ps I'm not old either!!

    Privacy Net Curtains

  • 1 decade ago

Well, I'm not 'old' yet, however bought some net curtains to give privacy in our bedroom whilst letting light in during the day. Mum always had them, too.

I also find that they keep more dust out of the house! Hence the reason you need to wash them.

They were originally crocheted by hand - filet crochet - and would have been heirlooms. Nowadays you can get them in various patterns fairly cheaply. The ones I have are completely plain, and you can go right through to the overly decorative 'poncy' ones! lol

    Purely personal preference.

PS: If you ever look at vertical blinds, then make sure they are really heavy duty or else people can see your shadows at night!!! :-O

They are good for privacy especially if you live in a town. they still let light in but people cant see in - except at night when you have a light on. Fairly cheap to buy unlike blinds

If you don't like them there are alternatives like blinds or voile's.

If you keep your curtains shut people will think that your lazy and still in bed though especially as its a bungalow hard to tell which is the bedroom

If you live in the middle of no-where and are not overlooked then I wouldn't bother and they are not necessarily for old people.

Most of my friends have blinds though and I personally prefer blinds. Most of the elderly people I know have blinds and not nets and my nan hated nets with a pasion

The idea of net curtains are to stop people looking in WHILE letting natural light in. They are most useful if your window is overlooked, or easy to look in during the day - if not then it's not much point having them.

Those net curtains belong in old people's houses because they like them (along with those covers for the back of sofas and lace doilies for putting the ornaments on).

Swap them for sheer voile panels that reach the floor - much nicer, softer and more romantic looking. You can wash voile panels in the machine at 40 as long as you fold them when wet and dry folded (to save ironing them). Take down those nasty nets and give them to some deserving young kids to use as bride dressing up things.

Yes I agree with you there is absolutely no point to net curtains. They are downmarket and only fit for caravans. I hate them too.

None whatsoever. Cheap and nasty horrible things. If you want privacy but don't want to keep your curtains shut all day, then there are voile and sheer panels that let through, look nicer than nets and provide privacy.

Most people are getting blinds in now and you can adjust them to stop people seeing in, with nets, people can't see in but you can see out. It just stops people watching you, mind you, if the lights are on at night they can see in. Just tha tbit extra privavy during the day.

When i'm sewing voile, and have to do a hem, i fold over 1 inch of material then iron the fold, (iron set very low), then fold over again and iron. Then even if the voile slips while sewing, its easy to put back in place and your hem stays straight. I fold the material twice because voile is terrible for fraying.
