Check with the Information Technology people on your campus. Some schools have made specific deals with Microsoft and have purchased full campus licenses so that any enrolled student can indeed get a copy of the software for a very low price. But not all campuses do this, and the actual price varies depending on what deal each school has made.

Once you know if yours does or not, then you can figure out if you need to explore other options.

You can get a trial edition for free from microsoft's website (depending which country you're in). Then there's freebies like open office (which is fine for word processing like word and spreadsheets).

If you just need to print stuff out and view powerpoint, microsoft was free "viewers", which are kind of like adobe pdf viewer (powerpoint viewer, excel viewer)

Go to download.com and look for alternatives. good luck.

You can try ebay for an older version that might fit the bill, or another path you might take is to download and install the free "Open Office" program at the below link. Good luck.

The computer store on your campus will have it at a discounted price, highly doubt it will be $7 though.

    Nowhere.

A legal copy for $140 is still a good deal.
