Why is the Breakfast Club called the Breakfast Club?

The film's title comes from the nickname invented by students and staff for detention at New Trier High School, the school attended by the son of one of John Hughes' friends. Thus, those who were sent to detention were designated members of "The Breakfast Club". "The Breakfast Club" at that school probably took its name in turn from the title of American radio's longest running network entertainment show, broadcast from Chicago, 1933 to 1968.

The last scene of the movie when the principal is reading the assignment that they were all supposed to individually do, the geeky guy (can't remember his name) wrote for the whole group and refered to them as the Breakfast Club as the closing song played in the background and while they were all going their separate ways.

They were in detantion with a bunch of different statues of people at breakfast time. I mean you had a freak, jock, preppy, geek and a bully. All of them at the end of the day learned that no matter what they had something in common with each and every person in there. At breakfast time everyone one of them thought that they had nothing in common with the other students that were in detention but at the end of the day they all would become friends and some even lovers.

probably because the kids were in detention saturday morning at the times that people are usually eating breakfast.
