Rental Application?

I live in Ohio. I recently filled out an application for an duplex. Part of the application asked for my checking account number and location. I put just the last four digits because in my opinion that is my personal information. Can a landlord legally ask for checking and/or savings account information?

I have never had to give my checking account info - and I've filled out a number of rental apps in the past. That is absolutely none of their business and I wouldn't even give the last four digits. ESPECIALLY if they also have your social security number. Leave it blank and don't mention it. If they ask you, tell them that you do not give that information under any circumstances. If they push you I would look for an apt. elsewhere. I know that sucks if you really like the place, but a landlord who isn't totally on the up and up can make your life miserable -and so can identity theft. Good luck to you!

It is probably not illegal to ask for it, but I sure would never give that information out, not even the last 4 digits. They are probably looking for it to do a credit check, but they can do a check with other info.

This does seem to be a strange question on an application. I don't think it is illegal but you were right to not put the full account number.

What you did is fine, it will show up in your credit report, they just match up the numbers.
