How to dispose of an old Indian head dress?

I have an old Indian head dress that is falling apart. It's just worn out. I was used for decoration (not worn) in my parents home. We our proud of the Native American part of our heritage, and it doesn't fell right just to throw it in a dumpster. Does anyone have any idea of how to dispose of the head dress in a dignified way?

If it is REAL, it would probably have eagle feathers on it. You should NOT just burn it!!!!

It would be EXTREMELY BAD to just throw it away!

If it is real, contact an elder and ask him/her what to do. Before you ask, give some tobacco.

Chances are that s/he will ask for it from you and you should give it to them so s/he can take care of it.

That would be the proper way to deal with it.

I don't really feel it should be in a museum. A sacred item should be in the hands of the elders, not a museum keeper.

If it is just a decoration that was made in Japan/Taiwan/China, take a picture and dispose of it any way you feel is right.

I was always told by my Elders that if your have a piece of regalia like that, you take it out into the woods, or someplace else that is in nature, smudge it down, say a prayer and bury it so it can return to Mother Earth. When you are done, put down tobacco.

    Hmm....

If it's real...like REAL real, like passed down in the family (as a family piece, not a decoration)...I would probably research what would be the most appropriate way to store it and not destroy it

If it's real and not from your own family, if you know what tribe it's from, contact them and ask questions. If you don't know what tribe, maybe contact a reputable museum and ask them.

If it's not "authentic," then I don't know.

I agree, burn it, and let the wind carry the ashes to the sky. If you can find it within you, sing, chant and drum as it burns. envision the bird spirit rising from the fire and smoke to be born anew.

    Toss it in the bin.

Or bury it with offerings to the land spirits.

Contact a museum, they may take it, restore it and display it.

BURN IT OF COURSE. DIDN'T THE NATIVE AMERICANS WORSHIP FIRE, OR AM I BEING STEREOTYPICAL?
