Chances are your wife will have to end up paying the ticket.
How long were the tags expired? A judge will probably not be sympathetic to the fact that you are from out of state. The fact is that your wife shouldn't have assumed that the car was legal, at the end of the day, your wife was driving at the time, and is responsible for the car, and the judge will likely look at that way too. Hope this helps.

I am not being a smart ***.
The ticket is your wifes. She drove a car with expired tags. It is not illegal to have expired tags, just to drive the car or park it on the street.
She will have to pay the fine, as unfair as it sounds. Ignorance is not a good excuse.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but she was the one who made the choice to drive the car, so the responsibility for knowing whether the tags were up to date is her's. Don't you ever watch cops?
Go to court, take the fine and learn from it.

Try and get a copy of the registration and explain to the judge that you borrowed the car not knowing the registration was expired.
He may dismiss it and order the owner to appear before him.
Or you could plead not guilty and get a trial date and then supeana the owner to appear.

say that she was intoxicated and therefore not aware about the tags and can be held responsible cause being intoxicated your unaware of your actions and this is also y she was driving under the influence her mind was altered by alcohol or drugs or just plead that your really depperessed and with that your mind is not clear best of luck

I think the friend should go to court with her and tell them your wife had nothing to do with it and it is their responsibility because it is their car.
