Bumble Bees?
When I was growing up we noticed that bumble bees either had a solid black face or a black face with a yellow spot in the center. One had a stinger, the other one didn't.
Do you know which is which?

thats the carpenter bees you are talking about. the male has a spot on his head, he is the one that buzzes you the most, he cant sting. the one with the solid black head is the female, she has a stinger and can sting the $%&^ out of you.

male and female bumble bees and male and female carpender bees are very hard to tell apart from each other. you really need an expert in hymenopterans to answer this one. you have to look at vein patterns on the wings and stuff, count hairs on the tarsae kind of knowledge.
carpenter bees burrow in wood, and bumbles usually nest under ground
