What is the main reason that NTFS is the preferred file system for a Windows 2000 partition?

It is the only file system that is available to a Windows 2000 administrator.

It cannot be accessed by Linux systems.

It supports a bigger file system than any of the alternatives.

It offers better security than any of the alternatives.

Most Windows 2000 administrators are trained to use NTFS.

Added security! Also you can manage who can access specific folder on your machine. Something you can't do with FAT32.

    The main reason?

I don't think there is a "Main" reason, but all of those reasons are contributors.

Also, NTFS file systems can most certainly be accessed by a Linux system.

The main reason is because Microsoft said so. FAT 32 is more than capable of running Windows 2000 just as well as NTFS.

NTFS is used for file and folder level security, which allows you access to control files and folders. file compression to create more storage space, disk quotas allowing usage of disks and file encryption which encrypts file data.
