Their are many reasons why nursing might not be for everyone. First, the schooling is hard and difficult, and then the job is physically and mentally demanding. Most of the employers try to get by with the most minmun of staffs which leads to burnout and high turnover. In that respect it is like many of other jobs which are hard police officers, teachers, being a soldier.

However, their are many people that are able to thrive and work as nurses, having sucessful careers

Several reasons. The people that you work with will either do their best for you or to get you fired. You have to deal with family members that are convinced that their family member is the only one that is important and so you are to be devoting ALL of your 12 hour shift to that one patient. You will have nurse's aides that show up for just the paycheck & won't do their jobs. That can come back on YOUR license by the way if you are the charge nurse when the state comes in for an inspection. People who are in a hospital or home can & do whine, b*tch & moan, then there's your patients. Loads of people try nursing but few can actually hack it. It is not glamourous or sexy when you get puked or pooped on, and no I am not making this up. But you can make people's lives better and make a difference, and you are needed!

I have been in nursing for over 40 years. I used to recommend this field to anyone that would listen. Now health-care costs have sky rocketed and one area that has been cut is nursing staffing. The nurses are having to take care of more patients now than ever. Also an interesting note - I now send home sicker patients then we used to have years ago. Patients I now see everyday on the floor used to belong in ICU 20 years ago. Plus we are having a hard time coming up with antibiotics to cure diseases as we over used them. I could go on forever but I hope you get my drift.

I plan to go into the medical field, and I seriously don't think I could handle it. Nurses are overworked and underappreciated. I wouldn't want to be blamed for doctor's mistakes and then have them take credit for my hard work.

B/c nurses have to do all of the dirty work and don't get paid enough. (When I was preg., I saw my dr. for like 3 hours out of the 21 that I was in labor.)

i guess it depends on the person... unfortunetly for me i dont have a strong enought stomach to deal with the blood and etc.... but i just wasnt interested in it. I do give credit to those who do this as a living.
