automatic transmission vs. manual transmission?

It is usually a preference thing. How much control do you want over how your car performs, do you find shifting annoying (especially in heavy stop-and-go traffic), etc. Generally, automatic transmissions are going to cost more and are more sought after - except on most sports cars. It used to be that manuals were faster, but that is not necessarily the truth anymore. The new Porsche 911 Turbo auto is faster than the manual, but there are other considerations. It really is a preference thing, and varies also on what vehicle you are considering.

Its up to you as there are a mass of fun automatic type vehicles out there as well as manual,the trouble is people see the name automatic and yet have had no or little experience with them and do not appriciate the fact that automatics come in a mass of forms which can be far from placing a car in d and then going. Often car makers find an automatic type box better suits there cars and we find cars like the Buggati Veryron and the Ferrari Enzo etc with an automatic type setup and this even goes down to cheaper models of cars. So really the answer is what suits your needs and suits that vehicle better as just because it is offered in a manual form does not make it better.

Manual transmission is more fun to drive but is less useful for the day by day driving. When you spend a lot of time in the commuting traffic jam you will ended tire of the manual transmission. I believe the recent multitronic type transmission are good choices for the people who like the feeling of the manual drive but want the relaxation on the jams.

the automatic is the preferred of most. the automatic transmission does all the work for you...no need to clutch or worry about taking off on a hill. manual transmission = 3 pedals...automatic = 2 pedals. On the other hand...if an automatic transmission goes bad it is very costly...where as a manual transmission normally only the clutch and pressure plate go bad. normally with a manual...you will have problems with the clutch and pressure plate long before you will have problems with a properly maintained automatic transmission. In most cases...depending on how long you keep your car..you will service the clutch and pressure plate long before you will have any problems out of a properly maintained automatic transmission.

Now let's define properly maintained. about every 50,000 miles you should have your automatic transmission serviced...which will run somewhere in the neighborhood of $75-$100. compare that to the expense of a clutch and pressure plate repair...depending on how you drive at about 75,000 to 125,000 miles...at about $600. so with an automatic you have spent about $200 for normal maintenance...normally done the same day....or the latter of the cost of repairing the clutch and pressure plate...and the possibility of being without your car for 2-3 days depending on availability of parts...scheduling it in for the repairs and so on.

With that said....I think you will agree...the automatic is the better choice.

Automatic is just that- it automatically shifts gears without you doing it...a manual needs you to change gears by use of your cluth and gearshift...the manual is generally better on gas, and shifts gears great (the transmission is cheaper in price) BUT the cluth (if needs replaced) will cost you an arm and a leg for repair...the automatic transmission is more expensive but cheaper on labor. This means- they get your money one way or another so whatever you feel more comfortable in is a good choice! When my son was a baby I liked automatic because I could focus on the rear view more and didn't have to switch gears...he's 7 now and I like a stick-shift and he likes to help me switch gears.

I think I feel part of the car when driving a stick. In city traffic that is not important; on a winding road it is important. Nothing like driving through the mountains in 2 and 3 gear.
