I assume right away you are considering the .45ACP, not the .45GAP.

On paper the .40 S&W is actually a better all around round than the .45ACP. Less recoil(difference here may be not so much of a factor), higher velocity, and in many cases higher energy (which is the main factor, at least one of the two)

Weird thing is, with the XD series you get one more round capacity in the .45 model than in the .40 model. And 45 does give you a wider variety of loadings.

Still there is more to to the game than just the stats.

I suppose if I was going to get an auto, and it wasn't a 1911, the .40S&W would be the cartridge of choice. Unless I was going to go big, like 10mm Auto or .44 Mag.

You didn't say what model .9mm you have, but why don't you consider a Glock? They offer several forties n forty-fives from full-size to compact, to slim (single-stack) for the .45 acp.

On the SA XD-40 I've heard mixed reports of flawless shooting and repetitive jams. This may be attributed to holding the gun 'limp-wristed,' as Springfield makes a good gun. If I were in the market for something bigger than the nine, I would skip the .40 and go to the .10mm (more powerful than even the .45 acp) or a .45 acp.

    Best.

I own the XD9 myself, and if I were to choose from either the .40 caliber or the .45 ACP, I would definitely go with the .45 ACP. You get a good variety of bullet weights to work with, it's a reliable cartridge, and it's a proven manstopper.

That is my personal preference when I pick the .45 auto. I know of few defensive handguns that are better. I also own a SA Ultra-Compact M1911 in .45 Auto, and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

    Best wishes.

For ccw you should be using a compact or sub-compact gun. Full-size handguns are the epitome of "sidearms" (duty holster kind). 9mm should be ideal for ccw, so why get another? Get another gun that is more fun to shoot at the range.

  • I have heard bad things about both models. I personally like Glocks. The model 30(.45ACP) is great and its recoil is more manageable than my model 22(0.40 Cal) The model

30 is slightly thick but it is worth looking at.

Keep the 9mm and get some Federal Hydro-shok rounds.

I would go with the 45, especially for the XD. It has many more options when you are choosing the bullet type and weight. The versitility will allow you to be prepared for any situation.
