What will help my dog gain weight?
My year old Lhasa seems a little skinny to me. She doesn't look unhealthy, but I think she needs a little more meat on her bones. What will help her gain a little weight? She is a picky eater and goes from being a pig to a bird from day to day.

You should be able to just swing your dog by your vet's office and have a technician feel her ribs and look at her body condition to see if she is an ideal weight. This is usually free.
A lot of dog owners think their dogs are too skinny when they are actually an ideal weight--I think it's mostly because so many dogs ARE overweight that people think that's what they're supposed to look like!
You can try and assess this yourself, too--Basically, you don't want to see her ribs when you look at her, but you want to be able to feel them easily when you touch her sides. (You don't want a thick layer of fat that you have to poke through to feel them.)
If she is really too skinny, I think you should get a dewormer from your vet to make sure that is not the problem. And then just make sure you get a high quality dog food--your vet will be able to give you a good recommendation. You might have to try a few brands before you find one that she really likes. Feed her based on the guidelines on the bag for how much she SHOULD weight (for example, if the vet wants her to weight 20 lbs and she only weights 16, feed her the 20 lb amount). This way you'll also be able to tell exactly how much she is eating every day.

First, have her checked and make sure that she doesn't have worms. They will zap up all of the nutrition that she eats and leave her skinny and not looking too good. When she's in for the worm check, ask her vet what a good weight would be for her.
If there are no worms then you might want to switch her to a good puppy food for a month or two. It is full of calories and will help her put on some weight. Be careful to wean her back to adult food as soon as she appears to be gaining. You don't want her to get fat.

Peanut Butter is high in fat, put that in a KONG. Pasta as well will help. We use this in the shelter sometimes once we have determined that there is no other problems other than the need to gain weight.

I think you should take her to the vet and find out if she is too skinny. If the vet thinks she's fine then she is, if not, then give your dog a little something extra. But, I do have friends with skinny dogs, and well, some dogs are just that way.

The same happened with my friend's dog. She would cook a burger, break it up, and puts it in a bowl for him to eat. Or you can put bacon grease in your dog's food, but not alot, just so maybe your dog will start eating the dog food. And you can try melting ice cream in a bowl.

Is she full of energy? Is her coat shiny? Then let her be. If you try and make her eat she'll pick up on your anxiety and food will become an issue.

You should give her an equilibrated food that she likes everyday , and stay with her to watch her eating . Otherwise don't let her miss any meals
