Do you eat foie-gras?
...and if you do, do you know what it is and where it comes from?
Ducks and geese raised for foie gras endure the pain of having a pipe shoved down their throats three times daily so that two pounds of grain can be pumped into their stomachs to produce the diseased “fatty liver” that some diners consider a delicacy. Foie gras production has been deemed cruel and inhumane by experts worldwide, including the European Union’s Scientific Committee on Animal Health and Animal Welfare.

Oh, and the female birds (30 million every year in France only!) are tossed alive into electric mincers at just few days old to suffer a violent and horrific death - their punishment for not being able to put on weight as quickly as males.
Sylvia H, I am a vegan!
And I do not think drinking milk (by adults) is either natural, healthy or right.

As a former chef I have had it many times, from the US here in Quebec Canada, France, most of it was duck, but I did get some once from Hungary that was real goose foie gras, it is just like liver pate or other types of liver in taste, very greasey because of the feeding and birds them selves, I have not had it in years, I prefer to just use duck livers and chicken livers for my pate and terrines now.

No I would never touch the stuff, really disgustingly cruel. Becoming vegetarian is not the answer though, nobody would farm animals if they couldn't make a living out of it by selling the meat. Demanding humane treatment of all animals is, and leaving everything else on the shelves until farmers, supermarkets and meat producers get the message. I don't want to see empty fields everywhere going to wasteland because nobody farms anymore, with the knock-on effects for all other wildlife.
By the way, do you drink cows' milk. If so and you're a vegetarian perhaps you ought to do some research into what happens to all the excess calves produced to keep the cows producing milk.
So you'd do away with all domesticated birds and animals unless they were kept as pets? Or cows farmed to provide milk just for children. Flawed logic there

I honestly do eat and enjoy foie gras. Before you jump down my throat about the cruelty involved with its production, consider the treatment from the geese's point of view.
I visited a fois gras farm in France, and while I was repulsed by the sight of ridiculously overweight geese who couldn't hobble 3 steps, I realized they were rather content with their spot in life. They were too fat to move at all, so they just sat in front of their feeders and ate all day. When the farmer came over to force feed them, they suddenly were bursting with energy and hopped up and down excitedly. They were getting fed better, more fattening food from the farmer. *The geese looked forward to the force-feeding tube!* Kinda disturbing, but when that's all the life they know, they're finding the bright side out of the situation.
The female geese are typically kept in a separate pen and used to breed. The breeding of geese is a regulated process and only certain (non-mutt geese) breeds produce certain grades of foie gras.
While I realize I'm not going to get a "best answer" vote from you...
I commend your effort to uphold the vegan principles. I am fully aware that animals are not treated hospitably in processing facilities, but I'm sure if beans has feelings, they would be none to happy either. Time is money, unfortunately.
Please just do not force your opinion on me. What I choose to eat is my choice, not yours. You can have your veggies, I'll take my steak rare.

I ate it once, it was served to me on a plate of so called delicacies....I was curious....I liked it but would never order it or eat it again in the same circumstances.
I knew it was produced in an 'inhumane' manner but it was there and so I tried it....thank you for the info, I will be watching the other answers with interest.
UM>>>>R.S....just reading your post...what animals DON'T you eat then?...you say you limit the meat you eat...L.O.L...but at a glance I fail to see what you don't eat, meatwise....by the way, what are your objections to eating rabbit may I ask?...you feel bad, sick bad or emotionally?

I do eat it - really enjoy it, although generally in the UK they don't seem to serve it as well as they do in France.
I know exactly how it's made and always have, I take a great interest in where my food comes from.

yeah I know, for a "delicacy" its quite gross. Those poor birds! Never had it and I don't think I ever could
