Full body cast/mold?
I want to make a full body (not head) cast/mold of my 5 yr old daughter. We want to paint it and use it as a display in our living room. Does anyone know of what type of materials are safe for making a full body cast or mold, especially for a 5 yr old? Something that will likely set fast and not be to uncomfortable? Any suggestions, please!

I haven't tried it but what about this idea, since the still span of a 5 yr old is 2.3 seconds:
get a small childs plastic pool and put in about 6" of play sand,
do front and back in 2 settings, have her wiggle into the sand until she's 1/2 way.
Pick her up and out carefully, that way you have an impression.
I'd try plater of paris in small sections to make the template(it dries before you're done mixing but it's cheap), add 1/4" pieces of old pant brush to help toughen it up.
before moving. You might wanna add something like newspaper to fill the "body". Sandwich between boards and flip.
like i said, never did it before but have made intricate moldings and worked with the materials.
VERY interesting art idea.
God bless and happy holidays

In addition to Ann S's idea add a bit of vegetable oil to the sand mixture to make it hold its shape better and make sure you lube her body so that the sand does not stick to her too much. Then clean the mold with a soft brush and gently pour in a mixture of plaster of paris but don't make it too liquid. When cured gently dig it out of the sand and clean with a soft brush. Similar casting methods have been used for centuries to make bronzes and other castings.

Try baby stores, they have casts for pregnant belly's, these should be safe fairly cheap and have enough plaster bandage too, though i would suggest doing one side of the body than the other or something like that as they do get tight as they dry and you don't want to hurt bub. good luck I hope it works it sounds like a great idea, maby if it works you could market the idea??!!
