The Philippine mind was indoctrinated that the foreign race was better.

    1. Locals were once termed as "indio" during the Spanish era and being dark-skinned was considered as belonging to the poorer class (they need to work more under the sun).

    2. The saints and holy figures in churches are mostly fair-skinned, have aquiline noses, deep set eyes (excluding certain Sto. Ninos, the Black Nazarene, Saint Lorenzo Ruiz).

This is because of the previous mind-condiotining their parents got from their ancestors about white or fair skin being beautiful. This kind of thinking is passed on to the children, mostly to the women.

Most of the children were born with the belief that the brown color of the Filipinas make them inferor to the white as sheet color of western women, and so the clamor to have fairer skin. This has been the basis of beauty product manufacturers in coming out with new products.

I am a FIlipino but to be honest, I am not realy that much attracted to people with light skin especially if they are Filipinos. I would appreciate a fellow Filipino if he or she has darker skin. I know that many Filipinos want to have fairer skin and most men would prefer women with this kind of color because they find them beautiful. In my case however, I am aware thet they may be beautiful but a person like this fails my standards. It's not that I am so brown that's why I prefer people like this but it's because I'm just proud of my color. To be honest, I have received a lot of rude comments from people about my being brown but I never gave them any piece of damn. If I conform to the standards of the society and get myself a lot of chemicals to change my color, I'd be losing my identity. Brown is my identity and I'd never lose it...

White superiority is a national mindset which can be traced from our colonial past. I'm the only brown-skinned or tan-skinned in a caucasian majority workplace. It offended me one time when several of them pulled-up their sleeves and compared their skin to mine after them having a long weekend of sun-baking in a beach. I was thinking they are playing-up on me, my race/color particularly, but they were quick to say that I am their "TOR" (term of reference) for a perfect tan, meaning I am their "model"! I've never been so proud of my skin eversince.

It puzzles me why we Filipinos spend billions of pesos on skin whitening products while Caucasians spends billions of dollars or euros just to get a temporary tan (a tan which is uneven nor as good as ours) and spend more for skin cancer treatment resulting from too much sun exposure.

I believe the government should start educating our children that having a light-coloured skin is not always beautiful. Also, let's get away with those skin-whitening products advertisement by white-skinned actors and actresses who don't even knows how to act.

Same thing why the white girls want a tan skin while most of the Filipinas are trying so hard & spending effort & money just to get lighter skin. (

Tranquil has hit the spot, as she always had.

Besides, a tan is temporary. And, one should never get too much tan even with a sunblock.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

In this case, the skin is always fairer/darker on the other side of the ocean.

I would venture to say that self-esteem or the lack thereof may be to blame here also.
