Coumadin......when NOT to use?

A 21 yar old girl in normally good health starts suffering severe headaches. She is prescribed Coumadin and some very expensive tests.

It seems to work but she then develops Hepititis A. Not quite recovered she is due to undergo a liver biopsy.

Yet the Coumadin has not been stopped. Is this normal?

Depends on what her INR is. It is a blood test that measures how fast blood clots. If her INR is above normal (usually is with coumadin) it is dangerous to perform a procedure that can cause bleeding, like a liver biopsy. They may give her vitamin K injections to reverse the coumadin or transfuse fresh frozen plasma to reduce the risk of bleeding the day of her procedure beforehand. The health reason for her being on coumadin may such that it would be detrimental for the coumadin to be stopped several days before the test.

Make sure that her doctor knows that she in on coumandin. Even if you feel that you are repeating yourself, or are a pain in their butts, tell them again. As you know, coumadin prevents blood from clotting.

Get a second opinion without leaving anything out on the history.

Coumadin for a 21 yr old sound VERY strange.

usually, coumadin is stopped at least 5 days prior to any surgical procedure. her doctor needs to be notified, to make sure he or she is aware that she's taking it.
