Best sushi in San Francisco is Ebisu in the Inner Sunset, on 9th near Irving. Seafood so fresh it is almost still swimming, and very quick and friendly service, yet they somehow manage to keep the prices reasonable. Be sure to make a reservation or go early ahead of the dinner rush, because if you arrive at the dinner hour without reservations you can wait for two hours or more.

And at this time of year, the bonus is that you can walk about three blocks to the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park to see the cherry blossoms.

Hey Irish, The place voted #1 sushi in San Diego is a place called Zensei Sushi, it's a little expensive, but usually busy so it must just be me. (Web site is below) My favorite sushi joint is Harney Sushi, in the Old Town area of San Diego. It's a little touristy there, but they mostly see locals, especially the service workers from the surrounding hotels and restaurants. The nice thing is that they have two rooms, the bar room has live DJ's and the staff and owners are on the younger side (mid 20's to late 20's) and every owner takes his turn at the sushi bar -- so you know it will be done right. The prices are terrific. (Web site is below) When you get here, look for a publication at the local liquor and convenience stores called "The Reader". It's a free publication that comes out on Wednesday nights and has coupons for both of these restaurants as well as many other sushi places in San Diego. Reviews for some are in the rear of the magazine. Thai is a little different. Everyone in San Diego only likes one Thai place. If they like Taste of Thai, then they don't like Celadon, If they like Celadon, then they don't like Lotus Thai, etc. There are two area's for Thai food without driving for blocks and blocks. The 1st area is next to downtown called the GASLAMP. (Website is below) It is the trendiest, not necessarily the best. It's an area to be SEEN IN. But I will admit, there is a lot to see. The Second area is just north of Downtown, it is called HILLCREST. (Website is below) It's called bohemian, that's realtor speak for a lot of Gay people and Yuppies. Prices are better, the wait time is better than in the Gaslamp. As far as UTC/Golden Triangle and La Jolla. You would never be able to park a car or take a bus and just walk around looking at the different restaurants. It's a "keep the car with me" 'cause the next Thai restaurant is 1 mile away. Good dining! Hope you enjoy my city :-D James p.s. the area's listed are not cities, they are communities of San Diego, so they may not be listed on certain maps. Look in the front of the yellow pages in your hotel room, those are the best maps :-p

A couple of my faves are Sushi Rika (fast, reasonable prices, yummy) and Sanraku (some of the freshest sushi/sashimi I've had) - both in Lower Nob Hill in San Francisco

Source(s): Been going to both places for the last 2-3 years

Blowfish Sushi on Bryant in SF. It has a cool vibe and great food.

Tokies sushi in Foster City. The sushi there is really great and not too expensive. Sit at the bar and talk to the sushi chef's, they are really great (especially Victor), and they will make you whatever you ask for.

Try Kiki Sushi in the Inner Sunset, right next to the much more expensive Ebisu. Kiki Sushi is fresh and inexpensive. I get take out for myself and my husband there once a week and we stuff ourselves with Sushi for less than $30 for the two of us.

  • Tokyo Star or it might be named something else now but I'm sure it still has sushi, it is where the old Lyons used to be, it is located in San Mateo a little way past Hillsdale Mall, the roof will look foreign so you will know what it is,

Sushi in the city is surprisingly horrible. Most people like Irving and 9ths Ebisu but I don't think it's all that special. Warning: He is my friend but he opened up this cool Japanese restaurant in Burlingame called Barracudas. Its young, hip, serves great food.
