Unhook the battery for 20-30 minutes, and this will turn it off until it receives another error message. you can also go to a parts store, and have them scan it, and reset the light for free.

  • depending on the year, 95-96 and later, plug in a scanner and find out what the problem is, fix it, then drive it for about three days, if you replaced the correct part, it will go out on its own, other wise it will remain on. i have said this many times to many people, use the technology to your advantage. when the light comes on, valuable information is also stored in the computer, load, rpm, engine temp, trouble code, trottle position...

you should see some of the information you can pull if the air bag goes off!!!

if it is a 1996 and above model(considered obd II) clearing the code will only turn the light off for two key cycles. if you attempt this and take it directly to a smog station the state computer will see that the moniters havent run and will not allow the tech to smog your vehicle. they will tell you to drive it until the moniters run thus turning the chech engine light back on.

reset your battery. disconnect the positive and reconnect after a minute. if it comes back on. possible censor is bad, example an O2 censor.

or just pull ur dash off and remove the bulb for the check engine light. that will stop it from coming back on....

Usually you can unplug your car battery for up to an hour and this will work. If not call your local parts store and I bet they could help you. Good luck. But the battery thing usually does work.
