Volkswagen standard fit radio?

My wife's 2002 VW Passat radio worked fine until we took the car through the local car wash. The engine was left running, radio still on, while I removed the external roof mounted ariel. After we came out of the car wash I replaced the arial but it no longer seems to get decent reception - it doesn't matter if I the ariel is there or not. During the car wash the engine and radio wasn't turned off at any point, I simply expected the radio reception to be fine after screwing it back on. Any thoughts on a fix would be appreciated.

your car should get reception even without the antenna screwed in. very odd situation. only thing i can think of is water got in the wrong place but very improbable.

My guess would be there are some deposits from the car wash in the base where the antenna (ariel) screws in. I would clean it out with some isopropyl alcohol and then put some dielectric grease in there. Hopefully that will fix your radio.

Check for corrosion on the antenna mount

you must have broke the connection in the bit of the aerial that comes off. try one from another car to check.
