Viewing area has shrunk. Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop.?
Viewing area has shrunk to the central area of the screen leaving a 5cm black band around the outside edge.I have since formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Dells system drivers. When the Dell system disc is in.. the screen is normal..ie full. As soon as the Windows XP re-instalation starts the viewing screen shrinks to the central area. The monitor is on default with no options. The screen resolution will not adjust from 640X480.

You need to go to support.dell.com and put in your serial number. What you are experiencing is the default xp resolution for a monitor (or screen) that xp does not have a driver stored as plug-n-play. Find any and all video drivers from the dell site pertaining to your model and download/install them. That should get you back to normal; dell's are notorious (at least for me) for doing that. I think they ask for a service tag which you can find underneath your laptop and it will look something like: 8QR2JR3 or something along those lines. Good luck!

you need to install your video driver. You should have it on disk, or windows update or dell.com might also have it.
