Can't have a baby shower so how can I let people know i'm pregnant and need things for our first baby???
I live over seas with my Air Force hubby and we're pregnant with our first child. The problem is I can't have my family throw me a shower because I'm here. What is an appropriate way to let people know I'm having a baby and that we need things by a certain date. I would like to have the things from friends and family before my due date in case I don't get everything I need. That way I have time to get last min. things ordered and sent here. At times it takes up to two months for us to receive things in the mail.
I'm not trying to be greedy and say people need to buy me something lol. Any parent knows it's a lot of money to get ready for a new baby and we could never aford it our selves. I'm just trying to get the word out that we're having a baby and if anyone would like to send us something they can and it would be greatly appreciated. I also know it's a pain in the butt because the price for shipping things to us is a bundle if the item is larger than a bread box.

I feel your pain!! My dad was career army, and I grew up in Germany. Anything shipped from the states can easily take 1-2 months to arrive at your location, and then the good old APO is *so gentle* and *careful* with your packages.
You have to check out WebBabyShower.com:
You can have a virtual shower that is hosted online. Each guest can be in a different location around the world, it doesn't matter. This might be a great solution for you because then each person could ship their own gift, so nobody would have to collect them all and pay all that shipping. Military families use their services all the time!! They have some very creative ways of making your virtual shower feel like a global get-together for family and friends.
Remember you aren't alone! This is one of those things that makes you a military wife! Soon to be military family!! Try to focus on the joy of expecting your first baby, and don't let the disappointment of not having a traditional shower with your family spoil it for you. Besides, lots of other military wives have been in your shoes, and I'll bet one of those ladies from the base will offer to throw you a shower! They know how it feels.
Congratulations from stateside!! You are going to love being a mom!

if someone throws you a shower then let them - if you have friends and family that want to attend then dont worry about if its rude. money is tight all around - go to garage sales u get tons of nice clothes, baby items for like 1/16th of the price at stores! I am having another shower, my daughter will be 10 this year, this is our second child and its a boy. So everyone keeps asking if and when - i havent really heard that i shouldnt have one. your not greedy, or selfish if people want to help then let them!! people love buying baby stuff!!! If anyone hasnt noticed times have way changed since the 50's on up. you're gonna get a lot of different responses on here, but go with what u feel is right. Good luck and congrats -

You must have some friends over there.....Let the people over here know when you are due and when the shower is and record it and tell them they are all invited, u will send them a copy of the video so they feel they are there with you in this joyous time...If people over here send things to you, record it being opened and talk to them as if they were there. Have the shower soon enough so they can send things in mail or money so you can buy the baby some things. Good Luck

Well there really is no polite acceptable way to ask for gifts ever, much less via mail. Shipping over-seas will cost a bundle for anyone who wants to send you something. You are kinda in a tough spot... I might suggest you simply mail out 'We're Expecting!' announcements to all of your friends and family and hope that many of them will be able to send gifts/money. I'm sure ALL of them will send you their well wishes and congratulations!

Well the only suggestion i have for you is to send out announcements to your freinds and family. I've seen them at Target and Walmart stores. I don't know about where you are but you can make your own. Be creative. Also in the announcements just make sure you put your number where you could be reached and your mailing address. People will get the hit esp. family and friends. And they will be soooo happy for you.
Good Luck.

you could wait til the baby is born and send out announcements, then many people will send gifts.
Or you couldhave your family and/or friends tell people the good news of your pregnancy, then tell them you arent having a shower so many people are sending gift cards to you or they could tell them thats what they are doing and myabe they would do the same.
I do not think you are being greety and most people will want to get you something but need to know your not having a shower and that they can send the gift cards.

Why not have a virtual baby shower? Send out invitations and then all meet up on the day for some sort of online chat.

How about sending out a letter with a request for suggestions for names for a baby? That doesn't mean you have to USE the suggestions; that way, you'll let people know without asking up front.

You could have someone receive gifts for you and ship them to you after. I know you have to have an AFFES BX where you are, so see if everyone could send you a giftcard if they don't want to send you a package. I'm pretty sure they can order one online and have it shipped to you. I know certain companies will ship overseas, so you could let a family member know who does ship to where you are. Good luck!

Wow...I hope that you are not planning on teaching your baby to be so greedy and materialistic.
Perhaps, you should just let your friends know that you are pregnant. True friends will probably send you stuff, but the way you are going about it would turn them off. Personally, I would send more if you did not ask then..."Hey, I'm pregnant...get me (fill in the blank).
