95 years ago, the Titanic sank. Should we remember all epic tragedies?

I went to an exhibit once where you got a card with a name on it, that was a passenger aboard the ship. You got to go through all these rooms filled with artifacts, and pieces of the ship and a room that had an iceberg in it that represented how cold it was in the ocean at the time. And at the end of the exhibit, you got to find the name on your card on a big wall and see if you survived. My name didn't, but my grandpa got a card that had the name of a crewman down in the bottom of the ship, and his name survived. I thought that was pretty cool.

We should but we can't, here are just a few of the major tragedies of the past century; the Titantic, the Lusitania, the Hindenburg, the Exxon Valdez, the nuclear meltdown in Russia (can't remember where) and many many more. There are so many tragic events that result due to the failure of technology that we can never remember them all.

I just looked it up the meltdown was in Chernobyl which is actually in Ukraine (then part of the USSR) also all the wars and genocides of the 1900's are terrible tragedies.

Also I too went on that exhibit of the Titantic (mine survived!) and it was very cool

We should remember the underlying causes that lead to past disasters.

Government laws did not keep up with ship technology at that time. The Titanic was not doing anything illegal with its lack of lifeboats. Titanic did not train their staff on proper evacuation procedures. Lifeboats were not filled to capacity. Problem: Government must stay up-to-date with technology and safety regulations.

The rivets were made of too much slag (low quality). They gave in at the slightest contact. Water compartments in the event of an accident were not large enough for the ship's size. Problem: The ship was obviously an accident waiting to happen. There was no quality control in place. Titanic's sister ship "Olympic" had a similar problem but did not sink because the collision with the other ship was not hard enough.

A financier could actually encourage the captain of the ship to speed in order to show off that they could break a record crossing the ocean even while going through the "ice berg belt." Problem: No safety regulations in place.

Other ships shut off their radios for the night. A close one did not hear Titanic's plea for help. Problem: No safety regulations in place. After the sinking it became mandatory for all ships to have their radios on and manned 24/7.

The underlying causes can be applied to all public vehicles used in today's time. This is what we should remember!

My Grandparents came to this country in 1912. They almost came over on the Titanic. Yes, we should remember.Many of the people who died were on their way here for a better life, like my Grandparents.While my hear go's out to those who lost loved one in this tragedy, I am so grateful that there was a little delay in my Grandparents getting their papers ready so they could come to America. They were very proud Americans! Their "Old Country" was Belgium.

Yes, you cant forget someone or something because it died or ceased to exist. If soemthing happened to ur family - would you want them forgotten? No, of course not!! :)

The titanic and the people who died aboard it still have living relatives today.

Its also part of history, if we didnt have a history we wouldnt have a future. If we didnt know what we had already done, if we couldnt learn from past mistakes, we couldnt better anything!

All such stories, with their theories of "what happened", provide vast entertainment for the masses. The continued research into these matters also bring forth new points of view & new theories, which continue the circle of things.

Historical events & their retelling or recording, are supposed to be so that we do not repeat such...however, sometimes I wonder when our listening skills went to.

I know that Rose and Jack weren't real. However, I think there is a love story everywhere you go. I believe someone was in the middle of living their love story. I love the movie but I haven't seen it in a long time.

I am in love with the Titanic. And I do think that we should all remember.
