What are your thoughts?
if the Democrats have their way and just end the Iraq war. Do you think that this will have a real effect on unemployment? These are the questions that you should ask yourself, will the returning GIs have an effect on the employment market, answer; certainly. Will the minimum wage increase have a combined effect, answer absolutely.
Now the hidden question that congress should have brought to the forefront and haven't. What of all of those war factory workers, that no longer are going to have jobs because there is no longer a need for certain items. These workers number into the hundreds of thousands of people.
I am not endorsing the war but it is a real question and I have not heard a plan for all of these people yet. You might think that I am full of beans but I will quietly remind all of you that with in just a few years of the ending of the Korean war we had a really hard time, recession 1957. Okay so that is one, but that is just a coincidence. Maybe but with the ending of Viet Nam the economy wasn't doing very well either. Do you remember that home loans could cost almost 20%.
My conclusion is that we are going to undergo one heck of a economy buster, with high unemployment and super high interest rates. I hope that I am wrong. If you have heard of a plan please send it to me?
As a militay retired pereson I can tell you that the jobs that are supposed to go to VETs from the government are filled with non vets, and they are the ones in charge, so much for taken care of our military. I should have pointed out that since the start of he Iraq war, we have not increased the amount of jobs available but have in fact sent many over seas, they call it out sourcing, I call it less jobs available
Sudonmy; there is no draft, has very little to do with the problem as many of the men/women that are over there are in the Reserves and will be going to their homes. The idea of sending thefolks to New Orleans is not bad but it was tried before with FDR, it was called the Civil Conservation Core, was found to be illegal and discontinued. There is several things that the Government could do but won't.

Its the typical pattern, you are right. Economies always thrive in war times, and then there are shifts when it ends. Just remember that unfortunatley, not all of the soldiers will return home, and some will never be able to work in the capacity they did before. Ugly, but true. I think we could open up some jobs if we cracked down on the problems with illegal aliens. Don't forget that soon we will also have a pocket open up, as the first of the baby boomers are starting to retire. The boomers represent a large portion of the workforce, and we will be needing people to fill those jobs. It may be a rough few years, but 10 years from now it will have stabilized.

If the war ends under democrat majority, the U.S.A. will aready be going into a depression driven by tax hikes and the roll back of all Bush's accomplishments. The flood of illegal alliens will compound the problem 100 times more than the returning heros- who have both skills and knowledge of english.. We will be in for a very rough period if the dems win the big one

There has not been a draft, so there would be no large mass of people leaving the military.
It is common to have a recession after a war. Our present situation is unusual - to have a recession starting during a war.
I think that the returning soldiers should be sent to New Orleans to rebuild. This would boost the economy a bit.
