Goldie the goldfish is sick help!!!?

I may know the answer allready but.

My Daughter has had this goldfish for 5 years, and now it

is kind of bent in half and swims like a corkscrew, It can strighten it's tail and there is no visible damage.

It spends today floating around and spends a lot of time at the top upside down, But is is still breathing.

Goldie is the only fish in the tank, I have changed the water

a few hours ago .....but that is not why is is sick/dying.

any thoughts or ideas.

How long have you had Goldie and what kind of goldfish is it? Is it really little like the kind you win at carnivals?

Your fish is dying. You may be able to take measures to save it, but let me tell you from experience that this can be costly and time consuming, and your fish may still die. My daughter's first fish was also named Goldie. It died and broke her heart, so I can relate.

A couple basic tips if you don't know these already:

Add aquarium salt to the tank according to the directions it comes with. Dissolve it first in a small amount of tank water and then add to the tank.

Test your water for the bad stuff like ammonia (caused by waste) and nitrites and nitrates. If you don't have a test kit you can just bring a sample of water to PetCo and they'll test it for you for free- only takes a minute and can answer a lot of questions.

Make sure there is enough oxygen in the water- is he in a tank with a filter, or a bowl? bowls let the water sit and still water does not hold enough oxygen for fish. And goldfish produce a lot of waste so they do need a filter to deal with it.

You can give fish a salt bath. I'm no expert on this though- I'd highly recommend a website for goldfish called kokosgoldfish.com - you'll find lots of info there and instructions on measures you can take to save your fish.

If your daughter is young and won't notice, you can just replace Goldie with a look alike! Then of course make sure you know how to prevent this from happening again. This may be the cheapest route if it is a common goldfish. Good luck!

Sorry bud... You may have anoth

er lost life. If it does die (sniff...) let it die peacefully in its home. DO NOT FLUSH IT. Once its life is done, bury it in its own mini grave.
