    The Bible does not say.

    The Devil didn't actually take the shape of the serpent; he instead used it as a mouthpiece of sorts to communicate with Eve.

    Probably some sort of tree snake- it would make sense for Satan to use a snake that was just hanging out in the trees of the Garden.

    Serpent is Satan's role as a seducer.

    Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

    The bible doesn't really say what kind of snake but it does say "...and on your belly you shall go.." to the snake which may have indicated it was a lizard of some kind....

    He was a serpent, not a snake.

    We would have to try to get at the original coloquial meaning behind the word to know any more than that.
