Cleveland Ohio?

I’ thinking of moving to Cleveland Ohio. Can anyone tell me of a safe neighborhood? I was thinking of East Cleveland. Maybe gay, or not. I was there as a child and remember it is a scary city. I remember there were a lot of places I would be found alone at night.

East Cleveland is the poorest of the poor in the Cleveland Area. If you want a more secure neighborhood consider Cleveland Heights/University Heights, University Circle/Little Italy, Brookpark, Lyndhurst, or North Olmstead.

First of all, the west side is not 'better' than the east, thats all just regional crap. The East side holds some of the oldest and richest neighborhoods in Northeast Ohio, such as Bratenahl, Beachwood, Chargrin Falls, Solon, etc.

East Cleveland is not where you want to be. It is cheap, but it is also dangerous. Stay out of Cleveland itself as well. Look to any of the suburbs. You need to do your research to find an area you like...we can't make that decision for you. I personally would recommend (if you can afford it) Solon. I grew up there, work there and still love the city. It's small enough to be homey, but large enough that there are things to do. They also have one of the best school systems in the country and have a low crime rate. Good luck & hope you decide to move here - it's a great place to live.

Some people have commented on the East-West issue and let me clarify it, because it is confusing. The East side of "Cleveland" (between downtown and University Circle) and "East Cleveland" are Cleveland's worst areas; crime, poverty, etc. The West side of "Cleveland" (between Downtown and Lakewood) is a much nicer part of the city and is even getting a lot nicer in neighborhoods like Ohio City, Tremont, and Detroit-Shoreway.

On the other hand Cleveland's East side suburbs are the most affluent and upscale. These are the suburbs found between University Circle and along I-271. The East Side suburbs are more East Coast, old money, Jewish, and WASP. Cleveland's West side suburbs along I-90 are very nice and upscale (particularly along the lake), but the area is more middle to upper-middle class. The West side suburbs are more Midwest, new money, and Catholic.

The gay community in Cleveland is most heavily concentrated in neighborhoods surrounding Edgewater State Park, which include Ohio City, Detroit-Shoreway, Clifton-Baltic, and Lakewood. You'll see gay bars and coffee shops on Detroit Avenue and Clifton Boulevard in Cleveland city proper. Other really nice liberal urban neighborhoods where gay people live, but isn't defined by them include neighborhoods east of University Circle like Shaker Square, Larchmere, Coventry Village, and Cedar-Fairmont. Tremont just west of downtown and south of Ohio City is growing increasingly popular with artists and a good place to consider. I almost forgot to mention downtown Cleveland! But all different types of people are moving into new housing there - and there is a lot of revival of restaurants, nightlife, and entertainment there.

There are many things to consider

If you are married, and your planning on having kids soon. Look in to schools. Chagrin Falls, is number four in the state, number 95 in the US. If you can I would suggest you visit first for a week or two. Get a car and drive around and see the West side. The East side, more Lake County, have some very good place as well, more open & country. Mentor, Concord, Perry, Madison, Kirtland. There are a lot of choices, it all depends on what your looking for. Good Luck

Cleveland is not scary anymore as long as you don't live in East Cleveland. Try to live in Cleveland Heights, or in Ohio City.

East Cleveland has been in the local news a lot as the poorest, most corrupt city in Cuyahoga County. Granted, you can probably buy a lot of house for little money, then invest into fixing it up. I guess it depends on your family and financial situation.

  • Lived in Cleveland, hated it, my car was broken into 5 times in 4 months. By Cleveland, I mean the entire area. I move a lot trying to find a safe place for my family while staying close to work. Lived in Brooklyn, car broken into as well as house. Parma, same thing. Mayfield, my car was broken into again. North Olmsted wasn't terrible, but still robbed. I moved to the Medina area to still access Cleveland, but also get away. Its about 30 minutes south on I-71 depending on traffic. Further more, this is the worst city I have ever lived in or near, and I have lived in or near most major cities.

East Cleveland is pretty scary. I would suggest a suburb. Parma isn't too expensive and it's a little closer to the city.

simple... West side -- good. East side -- bad.

East Cleveland is the poorer side and has less "attractive" settings.

.. not hard to find a place in the nicer parts of Cleveland even with a limited budget.

If you can afford it, move to Westlake or Bay Village. Both on the west side, but very nice towns.
