It just means that while you're at a hotel, you have many of the same accomadations you would have at home. They insist on making you feel comfortable by all means and aspects. Thus you would consider the hotel "Homey" or Home-like. A home away from your actual house.

The phrase refers to the fact that at home, you do not worry. You have everything you need, you know where it is, and everybody treats you like you belong, sort of.
A home away from home is a place where you are not made to feel as if you are intruding, resented, taking up space, in the way, causing stress, a problem, too expensive as a guest, a burden for people to have to find amusements for, etc.
Hotels try to tell you what you need to know, be friendly, and have a room service number and service people who can help if you need an extra pillow, a light bulb changed information on side trips, a place to leave luggage the last day, and even a TV set where you can do certain transactions. The hotel owners do this so you will enjoy your stay and want to use their hotel chain again.

Hotels are in the business to make money. Thats not a bad thing, they could be in the business of drug smuggling, as an example. A hotel will sell its services as being comfortable, friendly, and inviting, just like home. Saying, it is a "home away from home
quickly implies that you will feel very comfortable paying the outrageous price, b/c you will not be out of place, you will be comfortable, etc. There are so many implications to the theory. What they don't take into consideration is if you are from a really crappy home, then a home is merely a crappy place and what would you want to pay that for. There are other advertisements to handle that crowd, but in essense a sale is a sale, and money is money. How would YOU convince people to stay they night at YOUR hotel if you had one? Would you say, "cheapest most comfortable beds in town" or "vacancies alway, b/c no one will pay our out rageous prices." Or would you lean along the lines of "We'll leave the light on for ya." I believe that is Motel 6's slogan.

"Home away from home " is used as a marketing tool by hotels to show their intimacy with the customes. Hotel is a place where you pay for staying and besides comfort and other facilitis you also desire some family environment from the hotel. The way how the hotels make you feel home away home is by taking care of yours, talking to you, asking if you need any help.
Hotels spend lots of money in advertising. If they make you happy you can do advertising by referring your friends or relatives. That's why they want to make sure you feel the hotel as "home away from home"

it simply means that you can feel like home although you are away from your home, and ofcourse hotels create this atmosphere for their guests so next time that they want to choose a hotel, they would choose them again. no where is more comfortable than your home, and why not feel comfortable when you are on your trip, the only difference is that they will serve you and you dont have to move a thing! like we all say, "home sweet home" and at the hotel " home away from home"

It means that the place they are in , is very comfortable , as opposed to being uncomfortable .
It means , they don't have to put on any airs or graces.......and don't have to mind their pees and q's !
Hotels create the above atmosphere for the above reasons. Most people that are away from home don't really want to be....but they have to be away from home for work reasons.
So the hotel owners ,try to make them feel as comfortable and as welcome , as if they were at home , by creating a similar atmosphere.

You didn't break the law. You did the right things as in a three floor hotel there is a far larger chance of these individuals seeing each other. However this could have been a prank call. Tell your boss about it and see what he / she says. Say the individual was drunk and abusive and ask if you handled the situation in the right way. If not, ask them for advice in case something similar happens in the future.
