Who should win coach of the year in the NBA?

The top candidates are Sam Mitchell in Toronto, Jerry Sloan in Utah, and let's throw in Don Nelson in Golden State.

Update:

to the guy who said no one expected the Bulls to compete for the 2nd seed you are correct. Most people expected them to compete for the #1 seed. After the acquisition of Ben Wallace and their good showing in the playoffs last season the had high expectations for this season.

I just read the top 3 candidates are 1. Phil Jackson, Lakers

    2. Mike D'Antoni, Suns 3. Avery Johnson, Mavericks.

I would give coach of the year to Pat Riley. He was able to handle person health problems. Come back and deal with team health problems and still got the Heat to be division champs. If I had to pick out of the top three I would pick Avery Johnson. To hear his team talk about how good of a coach he is and how they respect him is good.

I'm gonna go with Sam Mitchell. No one expected Toronto to be this good this year. Nelson gets some votes, but Mitchell has had the biggest turnaround story this year.

Because of Avery Johnson, Mike D'Antoni, Gregg Popovich's been selected; I'd like Jeff Van Gundy or Sam Mitchell to be Coach of the year.

Avery Johnson should win it he has single handedly turned the Dallas Mavericks Franchise for the BEST i mean look at their record 66-14 NO body in the NBA can compete with that recored, well except The Phoenix Suns who are currently in second place or the Western Conference

After losing 4 straight in the finals, and then 4 straight to start the season, the Mavericks should have given up and gone home, but they didn't. That is because Avery Johnson, best coach hands down, wouldn't let them.

The only one of your choices that comes even close to the true coach of the year is Jerry Sloan. The true Coach of the Year is, of course, Avery Johnson. The man who has convinced a team that they must learn something from every game.

I'd go with Sam Mitchell. The Raptors have had quite a turnaround this season. Most people thought they'd be improved, but not too many expected them to reach the playoffs, let alone win their division.

Sam Mitchell of the Raptors...he has brought them from obscurity to the No. 2 seeded team in the East...has done a phenomenal job with 9 new players on his team!

I have to stick to the hometown with this one, Scott Skiles of Chicago. No one saw the Bulls competing for the 2nd seed at the begining of the year and yet here they are. The team has so many weapons, and he has done a masterful job of putting the right people in the right situations this year.

Avery Johnson has done a phenomenal job this season, leading the Mavericks to one of the best records in history. This is a no brainer.
