What is a good book to buy for a man? No sports related material please.?
He lists a favorite book as the Art of War, but I'm looking for something fiction or inspirational.

If you can find it:
The Breaking of Ezra Riley by John L. Moore
One of the Best Fictional + inspirational books I've ever read. I believe it's known as a Modern Western.
Loved it so much I have three copies in my collection.
In fact look into what others have said on this book...it's good.

Ah, he's a poser then.
Because who picks a 2600 year old instruction manual on war as their favorite book? Other than wall street guys trying to pretend they're deep that is. Or some guy who doesn't read much and feels the need to whip out a distant classic as an answer.
Go snoop his bookshelves and find out what he actually reads or if he reads at all. Maybe its war porn and the Art of War sounds much better than admitting your fav is Bullets over Ho Chi Minh or some such. If so then get him All quiet on the Western Front by Remarque or maybe a biography of a famous general like Clausewitz.

I have a specific taste in books that i buy for myself but there are books out there i don't buy that i would really enjoy and have gotten a few that i really liked as gifts. Don't ask me why i never buy them i just don't LOL.
#1 on my list of suggestions is books written by male comedians. I have not read one in awhile but the last one i read was from Tim allen and really enjoyed it. These are funny, fit the times, geared toward male readers, and sometimes insperational.
#2 Books specifically related to my interest or hobbies. Documentary or educational style books are fun and make nice decorations in our house. I have some on reefs and ocean fishes, my wife has some titanic books. They look good and are a nice surprize and definately something i don't buy for myself even though i enjoy them. Even guys like artsy stuff if it really fits thier personality.
#3 Rather than books how about a magazine subscription. Again i just don't spend money on myself for this kind of stuff but my mother got me a subscription to readers digest and i have been hinting to my wife i'd like one for discover magazine.
Rather than take a chance on a fiction book he may or may not like these are my suggestions and also seem more personal to me. Good luck and i hope i have given you idea's you like :)

My husband loves Mark Twain (Roughing It would be a good pick-very funny.). He also loves to read Sherlock Holmes books (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and books by Patrick F. McManus. He is an outdoors humorist (also very funny).

if he prefers non-fiction you could pick up a copy of the Lao Tsu...
or you could try Nicolo Machiavelli's "the Prince" (but if you're going to do that I recommend getting his other great work "discourses on Livy" as well)
if he likes fiction I find Neal Stephenson's work very good...

The Kite Runner by Khaled Houssein. My boyfriend said it is the best book he ever read.

Steven Pressfield- Gates of Fire
George R.R. Martin- Fire and Ice Series
read them for yourself as well. To me there's nothing to compare to giving a gift that has value to you as well. It seems like a sense of sharing a part of ones self

This might be shocking, but it really depends on the individual. Everyone's taste is different. Since we don't know him, any advice we would give would be utterly useless.
