Doggy behavior problems, 2 questions?
1) What are some good ways to get a dog to stop digging? We have a Great Dane that seems like she's trying to dig herself a swimming pool! Any ideas on how to stop the behavior? (She does it when we're gone so we can't "catch her in the act" and surprise her)
2) Our Golden seems to be neurotic. He's really needy. Maybe it's because he was abandoned when his parents moved. We adopted him from the shelter and he was fine for awhile and now he acts like he needs to be at our sides at all times. He also doesn't seem to "get it" when he's punished. Does anyone else have experience like this? What do you suggest we try to help him? I feel so sorry for him. He seems like he's in a constant state of anxiety. I am contemplating calling Cesar Milan, the "Dog Whisperer." Thanks in advance.
My dogs have been trained. I worked at a humane society as well as a vet office and know a lot about animals as well as the responsibilities. I am just not perfect. That's why I asked. We have 1.5 acres and they have lots of toys to play with while we're out. We have an electric gate and they are kept in a secure locked yard so they will not be stolen. I did crate train the Great Dane when whe was a puppy but why should I leave her in there? She loves to be outside and I only work part time so they aren't outside for long. I also leave them inside when it's rainy so she doesn't play in the mud. I know I am a good owner and don't really appreciate people saying that I'm the problem or that it's irresponsible ownership. That does not help me. So please only answer if you have actual advice, not criticism. I'm sure all your animals aren't
"perfect."

For your first question give the dog something else to do! Whenwe leave our dog home alone we fill her KONG (brand) toy with peanut butter or a treat! It keeps her really occupied!
Great idea contacting Cesar! He just seems really sweet! It might just be his nature!~
Good Luck!

1) don't leave your dog free in the yard when you're not home. Many dogs become anxious and bored and develop bad habits like digging, chewing siding off the house, barking all day long...
2) I'm not sure why you would be punishing him. You shouldn't be punishing any dog. Dogs don't learn through punishment. But I suppose if you're a Cesar Millan fan that's your problem. Punishment is ineffective and at best it makes your dog completely shut down. It breaks your relationship and teaches your dog that you are mean and can't be trusted.
Try teaching your dog what you want it to do. Try Dr Karen Overall's protocol for relaxation (link below, by the way she's a certified Veterinary Behaviorist, not just some random guy who has no training and doesn't care to learn about appropriate dog training techniques). Learn about positive training techniques and you will actually be able to teach your dog as opposed to yelling at it and making it lose trust in you.
If you need professional help look for a local trainer who specializes in anxiety, or at the very least who knows anything about modern dog training. Why would you pay more than double for outdated techniques?

Problem 1 - First, where is the dog when it's digging? Outside unsupervised? Or inside? If you are leaving her outside and going somewhere, that's not good ownership. Never leave a dog alone outside unattended. I'd suggest crate training. When you are gone, put her in a crate.

Problem 2 - Sounds like separation anxiety.

As to "Get it" when punished, you don't indicate what you are punishing the dog for.
Regarding the "Dog Whisperer", I would suggest instead that you contact a local trainer for dogs. They will be able to work with you in making things better for you and your dogs.

you have two dogs with behavioural problems. that probably means you are the problem, not the dogs.
hole digging is a sign of boredom. Firstly, a great dane needs a LOT of room. A BIG backyard with big DAILY walks. give him plenty of toys as well. If you are not giving him these things on a daily basis, he will dig holes.
how do you punish the golden retriever? dogs need to be trained... not punished - they are not human children. He sounds bored too. he also needs plenty of space, daily walks and plenty of toys. after you give him these things, train him to only come to you when called... but make sure you do give him plenty of play and attention each day as well.

Your Dog shouldn't be left ouside when you aren't home. People can steal him, abuse him or kill him. My Dogs dig for fun, perhaps you can fence off an area just for digging.
Your Golden is scared. Is there any reason he can't be near you? He's probably sick of being stuck in the yard all day too.

My puppy does now not cross to doggie daycare, however the primary factor I'd be involved approximately could be potty coaching disorders. The puppies are allowed (however now not stimulated) to head anyplace they wish and my puppy is a marker. I would not wish her to get within the dependancy of marking within. I could even be involved approximately worry aggression if the opposite puppies pressured her, or for her to turn out to be overly submissive and "damaged". Finally, she likes to have her folks round. Doggie daycare does not furnish that.

Cesar Milan is great! Try all of his ideas first. Buy his DVDs too. What have you tried so far about the golden? My dog follows me everywhere. i have taught him "OUT". When i want him out, i would say OUT and point. When he would walk away I would wait then give him a treat. now he listens to out all the time.
Now the digging,,, well hes a huge great dane!!!!!! its natural... it sucks, but i really have no advice. I guess what you can do is bring him to the area and say NO. do it often so he knows that hole is bad. This maybe bad advice, my dog doesnt dig so i have no clue. Sorry
