I've got a '91 ford ranger and as a matter of fact had alot of the same things happen yesterday, my truck was pulling very hard to the right and had a funny smell..also check for this, smoke coming from the tire..from what I understand so far the brake caliper is locking up causing it to pull and creating alot of friction which causes all the heat-this is something that needs immediate attention because it can ruin alot of other areas on the truck like rotors, brake lines, pads, etc. but more importantly can catch on fire especially on older trucks, my advice would be to get it to a shop immediately and have them replaced..hope it helps..

Might be an error in the PATS (Passive Anti-theft System). If your key has a little letter S on one side of it, it has a PATS. If you do, try this to determine whether or not that's what it is: go to start the truck and note the "theft" light. If it goes out when you turn the ignition, it should start. If it doesn't, but instead flashes, you need to have it examined. Take it to a local Ford dealer and have them run some codes on it. The key might need to be reprogrammed, or, if that doesn't work, a new key altogether (the chip might be bad). Sorry if that's not the problem!

Got a 92 Ranger, had some problem, guess what ? Had nothing to do with alignment , it was like theonean and james said, BRAKE CALIPERS. Let me ask you, did you ever smell any ,ANY , suspension part "over heat", have a low tire that didn't pull ALL the time, and ,Oh brother , a shock that makes a car pull ? ?

Sounds like you need new shocks and some other parts (bushings & ball joints, maybe wheel bearings) are worn out. Take it to a good alignment shop that specializes in that type of work and be prepared to pay the piper to make your truck safe to drive again.
As far as the 'hot smell', you may have an exhaust leak (it will be noisy too) or some oil leaking onto the exhaust and making the smell.

you have checked for low tire...right...easy way to check for your problem is............drive the truck hard ..till it starts pulling to one side again keep driving about another 15 minutes.. stop the truck.. crawl under the side that its pulling to....reach in with your hand ............and put it right on that brake rotor......if it burns the hell out of you..then you know that you have a stuck caliper..make sure you use a good burn ointment..dont want to read your next question.. my burn is infected how do I get rid of the infection

Drop it off at the shop on your way to grammar school. It neets tires, you need severe schooling.

What your smelling is your brakes burning up and fading. you want to fix it asap. this could be a lethal failure if you let it go
