Why do we usually use the word "square" when describing or referring to three meals in a day?

We often used the idiomatic expression three "square" meals a day. Why "square" which has four sides or angles, and not "triangle" which has three sides or angles?

Square meal has nothing to do with the number of meals u take in a day...

there can be just one meal in a day and it can be square.

Square meal means a fine meal which satisfies the hunger...

    substantial, nourishing meal.

There may be other origins, but the one I am familiar with is this one.

In good weather, crews' mess was a warm meal served on square wooden platters.

It refers to crews on old sailing vessels.

The Army promises nothing more than 3 squares and a cot.
