my computer is being really slow and my CPU usage very high Help me please?

My computer is being really slow. No matter what programs are open my CPU usage is 100%. I only have between 30-37 processes running at a time. I have tried deleting most of my saved items (photos, music, documents, etc.). I did a virus scan and well i have no viruses. I also did a spyware scan, it found like 52 problems which are all quarantined. But nothing seems to be working. My computer is still being slow and my CPU usage is still really high.

Some one help me please. It would be very appreciated!!

***and if it helps at all.... I have an HP pavilion mx7o and Windows XP......i just got it for christmas.

You might need a RAM upgrade. How much RAM do you have now?

  • From what I can see that you have told us about it seems that you have programs running in the backround that are dragging your system down..I know you thinking "Well DUH!"

OK, the best advice I can offer with what I am givin I would try eliminating programs off the start up menu.

    Steps to do this:

    Go to START, RUN

    Type in msconfig

    Then click the Startup Tab

Then look at that list. I would first try clicking Dis able all, All the drivers and programs needed to run windows loads in a different start menu, This is all the extra stuff.

Then go to Services Tab and tick the box that say "Hide all Microsoft Services"

Dis able all of those and then click apply and then OK.

It will ask you to restart.

Restart and see if that is better... then use the same steps to slowly put things back on the start up list that you use till you find the culprit.

If you should have any more problems or questions please visit my site to get more help and/or to contact me.

    Good Luck!

  • There are several primary areas that could be causing your computer to run slow. The most likely reason is that Corruption within your registry keys, registry classes, and registry settings, you have too many programs running behind the scenes and your system is essentially running in circles with its internal processing.

To determine if your system is in fact running slow because of problems in your registry and temp files and then speed up your computer, you will need to run a self diagnostic program called regsitry cleaner. This program is very very useful,it can fix regsitry errors, clean registry remnant, corrupt files and temp files in a few minutes. Then give you a bran-new and high-speed computer. There are collection and comparison of top rated registry cleaner:

Do you have a lot of games on the computer, that can slow the process down, also have you done a disk cleanup? With our computer we only put one game on at a time and when we put a new game on we delete the other game, that seems to make the computer less slow, then with the disk cleanup try to go to the start menu and go to programs, then go to accessories and then go to system tools, the disk cleanup is there. Try that...going online and doing other programs can make a lot of temporary files and you have to clean them up every couple of days or they can add up and make your computer very slow. If that doesn't help at all I don't know. Well hope it does help!

The numbers add up. 85% + 14% is 99%. The programs showing 0% are actually each using a fraction of a percent, adding up to 1%. If the computer is overheating it "shifts down", causing everything to take longer. (The alternative is to run at full speed and burn out.) Check the fans inside the case. Also get some canned air (don't use a compressor or vacuum cleaner) and get all the dust out.

    Download the following five programs:

    1) CCleaner <www.ccleaner.com> does an excellent job cleaning up temporary internet files, cookies, temp files, recycle bin, and prefetch folder.

    2) If you don't have an antivirus program, EITHER AVG <free.grisoft.com> and Avast <avast4home.com> -- only install ONE.

    3) Hitman Pro <www.hitmanpro.com> will let you automatically install, update, and run in Safe Mode many of the best free and free-to-try antispyware programs all with one click, including Spybot Search & Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE, SpywareBlaster, Ewido, and free trials of Webroot Spysweeper and PCTools SpywareDoctor. The free version of Spybot Search & Destroy allows autoupdates, but Hitman Pro helps in keeping the others up to date with one click.

    4) Winsockfix <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html%3E which is used to fix your internet connectivity if cleaning up malware breaks your internet connection.

    5) Hijackthis <www.merijn.org> which catalogs the places programs (both legitimate and malicious) are usually found, so that an expert can tell you if there's anything nasty remaining.

First, run CCleaner to clean out temporary files. In the Advanced section only check off "Old Prefetch data". Then click on Issues and scan for issues. Have it fix them all and make backups in case something gets erased that shouldn't (although I've never had problems with CCleaner's issue fixes). Then Scan for issues again until you get "No issues found". Then click on Tools and uninstall programs you don't want, and while in Tools click on Startup to remove things you don't want starting automatically. If you're unsure what you need to keep you can google for advice or email me with your questions.

Then update your antivirus program and then reboot into Safe Mode to run a full scan, then reboot after cleaning up what it found.

Then run Hitman Pro with the Safe Mode box checked. Reboot after cleaning up what it found.

Now run Hijackthis with the "Scan and Save Logfile" button, and email me the hijackthis.log, and I can advise you if there's any malware still there.

If your internet connection isn't working after removing malware, run Winsockfix.

It would be nice if you told us which processes were hogging the CPU cycles.

That might actually give us what we need to answer your question.

If it is mostly Svchost.exe and wuauclt.exe that is doing it, then it is probably a known issue with Microsoft Office and the Update Client.

I would bet you have a couple of trojans in there that are using your machine to death, try starting up in safe mode, and then run your antivirus and spyware apps, and how lond has it been since you have updated your antivirus and spyware detectors?

sounds like you have some things running in the background. Try uninstalling some of the background programs that were pre loaded in.

Shut down some of the background programs you have running.

Try restarting. Try system restore. If no viruses or spyware, it may be memory going bad.
