What have you learned about our relationship to our planet from watching “Planet Earth"?

As the executive producer of "Planet Earth", I was amazed and delighted to discover the splendor and beauty of the natural world, but I've also learned that our relationship to the planet will be key in our ability to maintain a healthy and prosperous world for all living creatures. What has Planet Earth taught you about our relationship to the planet?

I learnt that every little thing we do upsets a very delicate balance on our planet. I really do feel guilty after watching Planet Earth, because I know indirectly all I consume and waste is contributing to the loss of countless species of animals.

It's heart-wrenching to see that polar bears can't hunt for food as easily because global warming caused the ice to melt and they have nowhere to perch to hunt.

Or knowing that to survive, humans are destroying hectares of land that is home to other animals, and sometimes they get caught in the fires when people slash and burn forests for farming.

Or that due to the changing climate, whales can't find consistent sources of food.

    The list is endless.

I've learnt to be aware, and conscious that we need to do our part and chip in to save what we believe in, so future generations will enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas, or the rain forests.

I have learned that the best way to observe nature and observe our planet is by stopping to watch and look and listen. I've learned that animals all have a purpose on this earth and that they all serve a purpose... yes even the dung beetle.

I think the best thing about Planet Earth is that it brings personality to the animals of the planet. They are no longer these things that live along side us (and sometimes scare us to death when they're a 2 inch long cockroach), but creatures with a purpose and give far more back to this planet than humans do. They are the balance that keeps all things in moderation.

I liked also how Planet Earth showed death as a natural part and progression of life. One animal may die, but many others will live off (and due to) the one life lost.

I've been waiting a long time for something like Planet Earth. The cinematography is amazing and the patience at getting the perfect shots is amazing too. Waiting for weeks in a rain forest to get an image of the Bird of Paradise mating dance... terrific!

This was probably one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen on television. The earth is such a wonderful place and people should definitely be allowed to see that. I learned that life is what makes up this sensational planet.

However, i feel that before we can truly accept the earth and the universe for that matter we need to accept each other. Humanity is at a terrible place right now mainly due to the lack of empathy! It would be awesome if Discovery could do a similar special totally on humanity to show people that before we can "maintain a healthy and prosperous world for all living creatures" we must love an respect each other and then care for the earth together!

People think that they know everything about Earth, but how can we know its everything, if what we hear everyday is that something new is found. Lets give a thought on that.... In this planet, i am sure that we have discovered very little about it, that the ''big adventures'' are still waiting to be found and waiting to be useful, to help people, like in diseases and so, but that doesn't mean that now, like we found it, we can explore it to its last potential, we have to think in the future, that for every action there is a reaction and each of our mistakes today will reflect as big disaster tomorrow. Lets take care of this planet Earth and make our stay here the most comfortable possible so each and everyone of us can have a piece of it.

but it was beautiful and thought provoking. I have learned by reading all the answers how little people have been taught in school/home about our planet. I came from a different country and we learnt so much more about planet earth in school and at home. Of course in those days no TV DVD's etc so having this series is a wonderful awakening for millions of people. We are what we relate to our environment, not only in green areas, but in thought and word. That also makes a huge impact on the earth. Example war and disharmony have a negative impact on this planet. Like many, a greater hand than mere accident ,created this world and it is awesome to behold. Thanks. A Discovery channel watcher.

When you look at the clips, you really feel that humans are just another species in the huge world that is Earth, but we deem ourselves superior to the other animals, and due to this, dozens of precious animals are now extinct; gone from the face of the Earth forever. We are really just another species, and there is nothing that makes us superior to the many other beautiful and amazing creatures on Earth. I am trying my hardest to conserve the earth and have others do so too, I have not watched all of the series but would definitly like to they are so AMAZING I just look at those shots of the earth and think "look at that....we had better enjoy it now why it is still around"! We are killing earth not enough people care only about how they can make the world better for them and not how they can make it better for the world and the earth it self! I want to just punch people right in the month when they say they don't recycle or don't care what the earth will be in say 50 or 100 years cause they won't be here that is just ubserd!!! :( I would definitly like to see the earth be a MUCH better place in 100 years

Which if u have the same perspective as I do then I would tell you to seriously consider listening to the song "if everyone cared" by nickelback and watch the music video it is about if everyone cared about others and problems in the world and not so egotistical and non-caring!

Planet Earth showed me just how much there is on this planet. The planet is something we all take for granted, and it was really interesting to really look at what makes this our planet. There are so many places and animals that we don't know about, and don't think about every day.

I think Planet Earth showed me that there is still hope for fixing things on this planet. So often one hears about the danger our planet is in. The program helped show why we should take steps to help the planet. It gave me a new appreciation for what we have here.

Seeing endangered species with only a few animals left in the wild was really sad and it really made me want to help them out in some way. Seeing how there is so much that humans have taken away and destroyed was really sad.

I think so many people can now see reasons to help the planet and can now think about what they have seen on Planet Earth and use that new knowledge to try and fix our problems we have created.

And, as one last thing, I think that it was a really good idea to film this all. After all, if people don't do anything soon, the film might be all we have left.

This series has taught me that I really don't know nearly as much about this planet and its creatures as I previously thought. This planet is so vast, and the environment is so fragile that even if we are not entirely sure if it is our actions causing these problems, why not be proactive and do what we can? Besides, we are creating a new job market and cheaper alternatives for those last few resources we are about to deplete.

I especially enjoyed the follow-up segment on conservation. Conservation efforts are just that. They are efforts. We have an obligation to put forth some kind of effort to show this planet that we are grateful for what we have. A species like the polar bear should be saved if for no other reason because it could affect us severely. If we want to be selfish, we can still conserve by thinking how it will ultimately help every creature and living thing on this planet, including us.

I've always been an enthusiast of the natural world and there was little in the programme that I wasn't already familiar with. However, the opportunity to see some of these animals in the wild was just amazing.

My favourite scenes involved the Amur Leopards; watching the female eating the sika deer with such caution only reinforced the delicacy of these animals. With less than 34 wild Amur Leopards left in the world, they are so close to exctinction and still so few people are aware of these beautiful animals.

Yesterday there was a news headline on Yahoo! about one of the last seven female leopards being killed in Siberia. That headline was so suddenly replaced by another concerning reform in rap music language.

I didn't learn too many new things from the Planet Earth series, but this programme only helped solidify my disdain for human selfishness. There is more to life than what we purport, or are led to believe, as important. There are so many problems in the world, and all we care about is making sure we aren't late for work in the morning or that we don't forget to watch the new episode of American Idol. It's despicable.

I honestly have never seen the program.

However, since I have your attention (hopefully you are actually reading these answers and not just pretending to be interested)....

I am distraught with the notion that modern man feels he is "IN CONTROL" of the environment. We are a small part of the earth and at the mercy of mother nature, not the other way around. We are not a danger to the planet by any means. Sure, we have an effect on our surroundings, but the forces of nature could erase all traces of our existance within 50 years.. a cosmic 'microsecond', in the grand timeline. Mankind thinks it could literally move mountains... Well I argue even with a fleet of modern bulldozers it would take decades and billions of dollars to move a single mountain... look at how long strip mines take to develop. And global warming has taken over 150 years to reach 'dangerous' levels... whereas the amount of CO2 released comprises only 200 parts per MILLION, or 0.00002 of the atmosphere. If humans went extinct tomorrow due to some virus or other freak of nature, that change would be reversed faster than you can say "Al Gore is exaggerating this problem just to scare people".

Don't get me wrong, I recycle... I respect the planet... I don't like living in pollution; in the water and air. But I'm not so arrogant to think I could survive a week in the deserts or artic regions of this world. We are a fragile species. It would be nice to see your program portray nature as a terrifying and powerful force, and humanity as powerless to stop it. There is no symbiotic relationship with nature.. it is purely Mother Nature's game... a total one way street.

Camera work was amazing! I've learned that there is so much more out there on this planet than just what I see in my front yard. I realize that beauty surrounds us and even more beauty that I havent seen before presented on Planet Earth series. People are the most intelligent life form in the world and we are capable to see such beauty and appreciate what nature had given us. We live in a paradoxical world, we create our securities and luxuries but it comes with a price. People had always take advantage of what the natural world had given us and made something unnatural and mandmade, at the same time it is a miracle to man and yet a menace to all living things.
